Diocese tweets the Passion

The Diocese of Exeter has been tweeting the whole passion story, from Palm Sunday, and will continue until sunrise on Easter Sunday.

The story has been rewritten for tweeting in the first person and from Jesus’s perspective and will be sent out in ‘real time’ throughout Holy Week.

Canon Andrew Godsall said: “The idea with tweeting the passion is to help people relate to a familiar story in a contemporary way. Jesus used contemporary phrases all of the time. He wanted to make people sit up and listen so he used provocative words. Sometimes people got the wrong end of the stick – and maybe he did that deliberately - but it made them think!

“We wanted to help people really connect with the events of the last week in Jesus’ life. Trying to reduce the events of Holy Week to 140 characters each day has been a real challenge – but an exciting one.”

The tweets will all go out from @CofEDevon with the hashtag #passion.

To give you a flavour of the tweets:

Palm Sunday
Waving branches at me like I’m a King! So tempted to go that way. If only they knew how this week was going to play out. #makeway! #passion

Maundy Thursday
Courtroom accusations. No point in defence. They’ve already decided what to do anyway. It’s fixed. #notmywillbutyours. #passion

Good Friday
I wish someone would help carry this cross. I’ve got so much baggage. The weight of the world on my shoulders. #fatherforgive   #passion
