Tenants produce colourful displays - with plenty of gold

Tenants of East Devon District Council have again excelled themselves with a beautiful display of gardens large and small, leading to another highly successful garden competition, with a total of 41 entries.

This included two entrants for the Youth Garden, both of whom were Gold winners.

Kieron Bewes (Horticultural Consultant) was the judge and using the Royal Horticultural Society judging method once again, a number of entrants obtained the Gold level.

Family Fun Bike Ride to Escot

Coinciding with the Tour of Britain, this family fun ride starts at Land of Canaan on 21 September at 11am with a ride to Escot park for a picnic lunch. Trained cyclists will be in attendance to help all ages and abilities, with the aim to be active and safe.

Ottery St Mary Food & Families Festival

The fun of the festival starts on Friday evening (31 May) with a special food trail throughout the town in the local pubs and restaurants and continues throughout Saturday 1 June with a market stall running the length of Mill Street, a cookery theatre, live music, beer (and cider) tent, children’s competitions and much more.

There'll be cookery demonstrations in the pop-up kitchen featuring local chefs showcasing the very best way to use local ingredients.

Bus services to Cranbrook launch next week

New bus services linking to Cranbrook will be launched next week. The Services 4, 4A and 4B will be introduced on Tuesday (28 May) and will replace services 60, 60A, 60B, X60 and 380 on the route between Exeter, Clyst Honiton, Cranbrook, Ottery St. Mary, Honiton and Axminster.

Devon County Council is using developer contributions to fund the services, and its existing funding for Service 380 along this route will also continue towards the additional services.

Cadhay House and Garden open to the public

Cadhay House and Garden, located a short distance from Ottery St Mary, is open every Friday afternoon from May through to September.

In addition, during the late Spring and the Summer Bank Holidays it is open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday afternoons. 


Guided tours of the house recount its history dating back to the early 15th century. Visitors will see the Long Gallery, the Roof Chamber with its Elizabethan timbered roof, and the Court of the Sovereigns, described by Simon Jenkins as one of the “treasures of Devon”.

Work to start on new Recycling Centre for Sidmouth

Construction works will start on the new Recycling Centre for Sidmouth, Ottery St. Mary and surrounding villages in February.

The new site is just to the south of the existing facility at Woods Farm, near the Bowd on the C808 Ottery St Mary road.

The new centre will replace the old, existing facility which is now inadequate for modern demands.

The new larger centre will give residents a far superior service with minimal queuing and congestion and make it far easier and convenient to recycle household items and waste.

Exeter teenager attacked after Ottery tar barrels event

Police have reported that a 16-year-old girl from Exeter was savagely beaten in Ottery St Mary following the recent tar barrels event on Monday 5th November.

The girl is said to have been involved in an altercation with a group of females earlier in the evening, and was grabbed from behind by a male while she was taking a shortcut near Broad Street. The male, who it seems was a stranger to her, covered her mouth and eyes and then pushed her to the ground and kicked in the head and back. He was then joined by a group of females who continued kicking her until she started...

Have fun but stay safe for Ottery Tar Barrels event

The annual Ottery Tar Barrels event is due to take place on Monday 5th November and is likely to attract thousands of visitors to the town. Police are working closely with other agencies, including fire and ambulance services to monitor the event.

The Tar Barrels Committee is reminding visitors to be mindful of their own safety and follow the advice given by marshals on the night.

ELF announce latest Ambassador Award recipient

Exeter Leukaemia Fund is delighted to announce that Ottery St Mary resident, Mary Andrews, is the latest recipient of the ELF Ambassador Award.

Mary has been an ELF volunteering stalwart for many years, helping out at raffles, table top sales, summer shows, collection box responsibilities, as well as being an integral member of her local ELF group. This is in addition to her annual coffee morning which has raised many hundreds of pounds over the last 7 years. Nothing has ever been too much trouble for Mary, always eager to support and help when and where possible.
