Santa's Grotto opens at Otter Nurseries

This year, the popular Santa's Magical Kingdom at Otter Nurseries is opening on November 8th.

Book tickets for this date to enjoy lots of extra family fun. Characters from Cinderella will be there to greet the children, and donkeys from The Donkey Sanctuary are making an appearance. There's free face painting and lots to see.

Inside the grotto, children will meet singing reindeer Rudy and Judy, and enjoy interactive fun with the elves. There are exciting songs to sing-a-long to, Iceberg adventures, Mrs Christmas's kitchen and woodland walks.

'Pig out' at Tar Barrels fundraiser

Ethical restaurant Rusty Pig is holding a special themed event during Tar Barrels in Ottery St Mary on November 5 to raise funds for the town’s Carnival Committee.

£5 from every booking will go directly to the committee to help ensure that the town’s annual carnival continues.

Rusty Pig Chef, Robin Rea explained: “I thought this would be a great way for people to have an even more entertaining experience of Tar Barrels, whilst at the same time raising a good sum for the carnival.

Every year on November 5th for reasons lost in antiquity, the Flaming Tar Barrels are carried through the streets of Ottery St Mary to the delight of thousands of townsfolk and visitors.

Ottery St. Mary is internationally renowned for its Tar Barrels, an old custom said to have originated in the 17th century, and which is held on November 5th each year. Each of Ottery's central public houses sponsors a single barrel. In the weeks prior to the day of the event, November 5th, the barrels are soaked with tar. Pamper evening raises £460 for bike heroes

An evening of indulgence at Otter Nurseries was held in aid of an emergency courier charity.

Around 80 guests came along to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine, three delicious mini desserts and a raft of other delights including mini massages by Butterflies Studio.

The evening was organised by the garden centre to raise funds for the Devon Freewheelers, which provides a free, out-of-hours service to the NHS delivering medical necessities including blood and tissue samples.

New shop for Ottery's Samosa Lady

Ottery St Mary’s popular ‘Samosa Lady’ Tina Chauhan is opening her own shop in the centre of town after her style of cooking took locals by storm.

The shop in Broad Street will sell light Indian snacks and chai tea from a special family recipe, as well as chilled curries, pickles, chutneys, rice, bread and Tina’s celebrated handmade samosas.

Tina has spent the last few years introducing her own brand of home-style Gujarati food to the people of East Devon, selling the samosas along with her signature coriander chutney at the town’s monthly community market.

East Devon community backs beavers

An East Devon community has given its backing to a local population of wild beavers.

160 people attended a ‘beaver meeting’ in Ottery St Mary on Tuesday 19 August. The meeting had been specially convened by the Devon Wildlife Trust in an attempt to give everyone what the charity called, ‘a chance to make their views known about the future of their new and unusual neighbours.’
