Young Farmers raise funds for flood victims

Young Farmers from across Devon and the rest of the country, have been working together to raise money and collect forage for farmers affected by the recent floods in the Somerset levels.

Culm Valley YFC raised over £200 from members' donations at their recent Tight and Bright disco, which is being sent to the affected Somerset farmers. Meanwhile, Honiton YFC raised £4,500 at the performance of their production Gogglebox and through an Auction of Promises, with half the money raised being donated to Somerset farmers and the other half to Diabetes UK.

Wages must double to keep up with House Prices

Most people earning average wages in the South West would need to more than double their annual salary just to keep up with out of control house prices, new research by homelessness charity Shelter shows. In the study, released today, the charity looked at wage and house price inflation since 1997 in every area of the region. This was then used to calculate what average annual earnings would be if they had risen at the same rate as house prices. Council leader tells government 'The Region deserves more help'

Devon County Council leader John Hart has demanded that the Government provides more support for the South West following the latest wave of storm force weather.

In his message Mr Hart calls for the Government to ensure that the South West is not “left to pick up a massive bill” in road repairs.

In recent years many local authorities, including Devon, have seen the amount of money available for travel maintenance fall below the cost of repairs.

Three lapdancers and their manager have been cleared of kidnapping a Gloucestershire club boss. Curtis Woodman alleged the four women and two men forced him into a car and robbed him in September 2012. Dancers Mandy Cool, Rachel Goodchild and Stephanie Pye, and manager Charlotte Devaney, had worked for him during the Cheltenham Hunt Festival. Brothers Robert Morris, 27, and Alexander Morris, 23, were also cleared of kidnap. 490 South West businesses given exporting chance

490 businesses in the South West could receive free tailor-made advice to how to export their business overseas.

The new advice is open to all 8,900 UK businesses with a turnover of between £25 million and £250 million which the Government consider to be to be medium sized.

A pilot scheme had been launched in Yorkshire and the South East but is expected to see a full national roll-out afterwards.

Police seek brick attack witnesses

Police in Newton Abbot are appealing for witnesses after a man was allegedly assaulted in the town on Tuesday 21 January. The assault happened on Powderham Road early in the afternoon, between around 1pm and 3pm. A man approached the 27-year-old victim and assaulted him with a brick. The victim suffered leg injuries as a result of the incident. The suspect is described as white, short and of stocky build. Libraries have a role in helping new and small businesses grow, says Dr Stephen Fear, Entrepreneur in Residence and Ambassador at The British Library.
