It comes quickly, doesn’t it?

One minute you’re plunged in the depths of winter, and then the clocks change, the evenings draw out and every hedge in Devon seems to clatter to the tune of a chiffchaff.

It’s a beautiful time of year indeed, but perhaps the most wonderful sight is the carpet of blue that bedecks the woods, valleys and meadows around Exeter as the bluebells emerge.

The team at Exeter's Real Food Store have pulled together their 5 favourite places to see these magical flowers - scroll down to see the full list.

NCS- Litter Prevention Project-Haven Banks

We are a group of students on the Outside Education course at Haven Banks in Exeter. We are currently taking part in an NCS Project, as part of the experience we have to come up with a social action project.

Our project idea is a Litter prevention movement, we are aiming to raise awareness of the harmful effect of litter on the environment and about making our city a nicer place to live in. We chose this as our project as we are passionate about the outside world and the majority of our course is spent outdoors. It saddens us to see litter in the river and the sea, as well as...

Since the UK first went into lockdown it’s been a unique time for most of us. This spring has been unlike any other and, more than ever, we’ve seen how important the natural world is to our health and wellbeing.

From enjoying the uplifting sound of birdsong through an open window, to...

Spending time in the garden is linked to similar benefits for health and wellbeing as living in wealthy areas, according to a new large-scale study.

Research conducted by the University of Exeter and the Royal Horticultural Society charity, published in Elsevier’s Landscape and Urban Planning , analysed data from nearly 8,000 people collected by Natural England between 2009 and 2016. The research, conducted with funding from Innovate UK and NIHR, found that people who spend time in the garden are significantly more likely to report general good health, higher psychological...

New partnership for local woodland

Holyford Woods Local Nature Reserve is now being managed by East Devon District Council’s Countryside Team in partnership with Axe Vale & District Conservation Society (AVDCS), following the dissolution of the long-standing Holyford Woodland Trust.

Holyford Woodland Trust (HWT) was formed in 2001 when South West Water put the wooded valley up for sale and the cost of purchase to secure this important wild space for nature was met by East Devon District Council and community fundraising, led by HWT. Since then, much good work has taken place within the woodland, to maintain and...

The County Council has teamed up with the Woodland Trust and the Devon Ash Dieback Resilience Forum to encourage communities and landowners to plant more trees.

It was also an opportunity to launch the new schemes. Devon County Council, in association with the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity the Woodland Trust, is offering...

National Tree Week - from 23rd November to 1st December – is the UK's largest annual tree celebration, and marks the start of the winter tree planting season. One locally-based conservation charity is using the occasion to shine a spotlight on some of the many trees in its care.

Wild Planet Trust is the conservation charity behind Paignton Zoo. The zoo is more famous for animals than trees, although it is pleasantly-wooded. Often overlooked are the Clennon local nature reserve adjoining the zoo and the Primley public open space across the road, both managed by the Trust.
