Jonathan Foyle: The Marriage bed of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York

In 2010, a very curious piece of furniture was bought from a Chester auction house, on account of its elaborate carving. Upon delivery, the owner thought it was not Victorian, as advertised, but early Tudor.

That would make it exceptionally rare. But in January 2013 Dr Jonathan Foyle examined it, and began researching in depth its puzzling symbolism and old surfaces. Over the course of 16 months evidence aligned to reveal its astonishing origin - it was the marriage bed of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, made for 18 January 1486. From August to December 1914 Devon’s population witnessed the transformation from peacetime to wartime. The residents of Devon were encouraged to participate in the war effort which ranged from recruitment efforts to war charities.

Dr Richard Batten, who researched Devon and the First World War at the University of Exeter, explores how Devonians responded to the circumstances of wartime on the Home Front in 1914.

Afternoon lecture: Uncovering Crowfoot

Official representatives of the Blackfoot Nation of Canada will be visiting RAMM to offer their knowledge about sacred regalia held by the museum. This is the first time it has been accessed by the Blackfoot Nation in 130 years. It is special because it was once owned by Isapo-muxika (Crow Indian’s Big Foot or Crowfoot) an important Blackfoot leader at a time when Canada was being created using their land. Through colonial hands the regalia was sold to the museum in 1904.

This lecture will present a Blackfoot history of Crowfoot and the effects this has on Blackfoot people today...

Notable ceramicist, Takeshi Yasuda, will talk about Jingdezhen, the city in China associated with the historical and contemporary production of porcelain. He will give illustrated examples of how clay from Kaolin mountains was created in the city and expand upon his own work currently on show in the Devon Guild exhibition Porcelain Complexion.
