Leading local advice charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, is delighted to announce that The Family Law Company will be joining its successful legal clinic scheme.

Law firm raises £2,000 in Will Fortnight

Solicitors at Beviss & Beckingsale raised two grand in two weeks by writing and amending wills for clients in exchange for a donation to local charity Hospiscare.

The Honiton-­based law firm raised a total of £2,004 to help care for patients living with a terminal illness in Exeter, Mid and East Devon.

Lawyers at Beviss & Beckingsale’s office in Honiton raised £1,044, a further £500 came from the Chard office, £385 from staff in Axminster and £75 from Seaton.

Car smoking ban comes into force

New legislation has come into force today (1st October) which makes it an offence to smoke in a vehicle containing a person under the age of 18.

The Smoke-Free (Private Vehicles) Regulations 2015 has been introduced to protect children from the harms of second-hand smoke.

It is now an offence to smoke in a private vehicle with someone under the age of 18 present, and if you are the driver, to fail to prevent smoking in your vehicle with someone under-18 present.

Tenants safer under new Government measures

New fire safety measures will help save the lives of tenants and ensure all rented property is equipped with a smoke alarm, Housing Minister Brandon Lewis said today.

From today (1 October), landlords will be required by law to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their properties, under new Government measures coming into force.

It is estimated this could help prevent more than 25 deaths and nearly 700 injuries a year. Landlords who fail to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms could face up to a £5,000 civil penalty.

Project aims to empower children in care

A first year University of Exeter Law student has founded a project focused on improving the prospects of children in care.

Michael Berry, who is also a self-employed paralegal with the Fostering Foundation, is a care leaver himself and believes not enough is being done to give the child a voice and empower them with the self-confidence to have an active role in deciding their future.

The Avolve project aims to improve pupil performance at GCSE level, with currently only 17.3% of children in care achieving five A*-C level grades.
