As 2017 draws to a close, the year when local charity Hospiscare celebrated its 35th Anniversary, Dr John Rutter who worked for the organisation in the early 80s is back working there again now at the age of 69. He reflects on how it all started and looks back on his own career to share his thoughts on caring for patients with a terminal illness.

Dr John, who is married and has five daughters, has always lived in Exeter. He recalls: “Back in the 1980s I was caring for the father of one of my friends. He was dying of cancer. I remember visiting him throughout the night and...

Dan Dickens, 60 from Exeter, has found a unique way of volunteering for local charity Hospiscare in one of their Exeter shops. Dan, a local artist, has bought his talents into a niche role at the South Street Shop (Exeter), which specialises in vintage and antique books, music, art and collectables.

Dan explains: “I’ve had a few health problems recently, so just over a year ago as part of my recovery I decided to do some volunteering. Charity shops have always appealed to me and over my lifetime I have furnished a couple of homes from the Hospiscare shops in Exeter. I have a...

Hospiscare has been getting in the Christmas spirit with the help of children from across Exeter, Mid and East Devon.

Children from the Exwick Ark Nursery, Little MarVals in Pinhoe, Little Dragons at Clyst St George, Exeter Junior School and Kiddi Caru have been busy making snowflakes to decorate the charity’s Warehouse Store in Marsh Barton.

Staff at the shop were looking for new ideas to decorate their window for Christmas and were delighted with the sparkly, colourful decorations the children presented to them. Community Fundraiser Susie Healey said,

For some families, this will be the last Christmas they spend together. This December, Hospiscare is asking for your help to give patients with terminal illnesses the Christmas they deserve.

Take Colin, for example. Last year, Colin had terminal lung cancer and was admitted to the hospice ward in Exeter a few days before Christmas. He had gone to the hospital where they found he had an infection, and he was given the choice of being treated in the hospital or the hospice. Colin chose the hospice, which he knew well, and where they had the expertise to control the pain he was...

There are many myths surrounding hospices, one of the biggest misconceptions is that if you get admitted to one, it’s because you are about to die. That’s certainly the impression Bronia Rosier and her family had when she was referred to local charity, Hospiscare.

Bronia, 56, from Ottery St Mary, was diagnosed with a tumour two years ago. After a course of chemo and radiotherapy which was unsuccessful in shrinking the growth, she underwent surgery to remove it. However, the cancer had already spread to other areas of her body and Bronia was given the news that no further treatment...

Christmas is a time of year when we all get involved with certain traditions. Hanging the mistletoe, brussels sprouts, mince pies, Christmas trees, office parties, so the list goes on…. And it’s no different for retired police officer Barry Frost, 59, from Exeter. However one of Barry’s festive traditions is a tad more unusual than most.

For the last 14 years Barry has gathered a group of colleagues and friends together who take off their clothes in the great outdoors to feature on the front of Barry’s light-hearted Christmas cards.

In the past these cards have been for...

Hospiscare’s Light Up a Life event takes place annually in the run up to Christmas, a particularly poignant time of year for many bereaved people. The services offer a time and space apart to remember and honour loved ones who are no longer with us. With a blend of readings, poetry, music and the opportunity to join voices in singing carols, these occasions bring at least as much joy as sadness and are never less than uplifting.

This year’s series of services will culminate at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday, 17 December. Hospiscare’s Karen Turner said: “Everyone is invited to attend...
