For over 170 years, YMCA Exeter has been supporting disadvantaged communities across Devon, particularly those now who are affected by homelessness.

This year the charity, which covers Exeter, East, Mid and North Devon, is launching a new fundraising campaign in order to radically transform the communal spaces shared by residents at its house on St David’s Hill, Exeter, as well as generate funds to help offer additional support services to those in need.

Student volunteers help Exeter’s homeless by distributing excess campus food

Students from the University of Exeter are joining forces with a local charity by distributing unsold food to the city’s homeless community.

The Food Action Project focuses on reducing the amount of edible food within the sell-by-date that goes unsold in shops, cafes and restaurants across the University, whilst also helping those who struggle daily for food within the city.

Organiser Alec James, VP Welfare and Diversity for the Student’s Guild and former Geography student, hopes that food outlets across Exeter will eventually join the project.

Leading West Country Independent Estate Agency, Wilkinson Grant & Co, will be supporting YMCA Exeter in several large fundraising initiatives throughout 2017.

Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, will be delivering hampers to homeless dogs this Christmas after 170 homelessness organisations requested parcels for 1200 dogs. With the number of people rough sleeping in England doubling since 2010, this service is as vital as ever [1] The charity will be delivering gifts to homelessness organisations in Exeter for almost 30 dogs. Exeter night shelter gets go-ahead

There’s good news for people sleeping rough on the streets in Exeter this winter, with a night shelter set to open.

The shelter in Market Street, Exeter, is expected to open at the weekend and will be run by Julian House as part of the Safe Sleep initiative.

The green light was given by Exeter City Council’s planning committee, where an application for a change of use for the premises was last night granted (Monday 5 December). The building will now be used for rough sleepers to shelter overnight from harsh winter weather, up until the end of February.

Wilkinson Grant pledge to support Exeter’s homeless

Leading West Country Independent Estate Agents, Wilkinson Grant & Co have launched their annual campaign to raise awareness and help the homeless community in Exeter.

The agency has pledged to donate gifts to homeless individuals for each property they list for sale, or to let, before Christmas.

Housing and homelessness charity Shelter is appealing for help to fund its free helpline after seeing a surge in demand from the South West, with over 43,000 calls received in the past year alone.

Since the formation of a task force earlier this year, a number of key developments have already taken place. Fewer people now live rough and survive on the streets of Exeter and reports of anti social behaviour have decreased.
