Leading West Country Independent Estate Agents, Wilkinson Grant & Co have launched their annual campaign to raise awareness and help the homeless community in Exeter.

The agency has pledged to donate gifts to homeless individuals for each property they list for sale, or to let, before Christmas.

This year they have added a further dimension to the campaign by also pledging to make an additional donation to YMCA Exeter for each property sold or let in that time.

Last year the agency collected items such as toiletries, jumpers, blankets and undergarments, and, working with Westgate Christian Fellowship, visited the streets of Exeter to provide gifts to homeless individuals.

Managing Director, Roger Wilkinson, says “Homelessness in Exeter is a growing problem and so are the issues that surround it.”

“The over-riding issue is to address the causes of homelessness but in the immediate, particularly at this time of year, we really should spare a thought for the individual men and women – young and old – who don’t have a roof over their head or any of the items mentioned above.”

“Our initiative, to package and gift such things to individuals who need it most, is just one of many by local charities, community and church groups”.

“This year we are pleased to support the work of Exeter YMCA to help shape a better future for many young people in the area”.

The money donated to YMCA Exeter will go towards the long term support programmes that the organisation offers to help young people improve their lives and contribute positively to society.

Bethan Spencer, Fundraising and Communications Officer for YMCA Exeter, said: “We are very grateful for the support from Wilkinson Grant, especially at this time of year when life on the streets is harder than ever. Between now and Christmas we will provide 3,927 nights’ accommodation. The support from Wilkinson Grant this Christmas will help ensure a number of young people who have been homeless will be entering 2017 with real hope for the future.”

Wilkinson Grant is actively encouraging donations and ask that all contributions be dropped off at their Exeter office on Castle Street.
