2,082 children in the South West are homeless and living in temporary accommodation, according to the latest government figures.

The new statistics recorded at the end of September mean that, across Britain, nearly 85,000 children now face the reality of waking up homeless this Christmas morning. Shelter is warning that as the rising cost of living and cuts to the housing safety net continue to take their toll, many more parents are likely to find themselves facing an ongoing struggle to keep a roof over their children’s heads.

The charity has launched an emergency...

The amount of long term unfurnished empty properties in Teignbridge stood at 385, a reduction of 156 since the same time four years ago.

The figures have been released during National Empty Homes Week which is aimed at highlighting the waste of empty property nationwide and to celebrate the success of numerous examples and new initiatives to bring empty homes back into use.

Properties become empty for a variety of reasons, including owners moving into nursing homes or other properties going into probate. In most cases owners of empty properties do not want to leave them...

A homeless man in Exeter’s city centre has been attracting some attention for his imaginative approach to job hunting.

Ken Jones, 44, accompanied by his German Shepherd Bailey is refusing to take any cash from charitable passers-by and is instead looking for employment.

Holding a sign reading “Have you any work 4 me? Farm-Labour, Industrial Cleaning, Re-Cycling, Demolition, Builders Prep, will do Night watch”

Ken said: “I’d like to get a place on a farm for the winter. Get work and a place to stay. I’m from a farming background originally, from Wales.

“I’m...

Local charity Exeter YMCA is issuing the challenge, to those with a daring heart, to run the Great West Run on behalf of Exeter YMCA wearing an imaginative costume. The runner with the most impressive costume will receive two day passes at the Exeter Golf and Country Club as a prize.

Exeter YMCA Chief Executive, Peter Stephenson, said, ‘For most of us a half marathon is gruelling enough but some people are looking for that extra edge. Dressing up as your favourite superhero, a fairy, a gorilla, or whatever idea you have, will make the event a greater challenge, will be good fun and...

East Devon District Council definitive 'No' to homeless hotel 'plan'

Plans for supporting homeless people in East Devon will not be amended to include new hotel accommodation in Exmouth, it was confirmed this week.

With numbers of homeless people housed in B&Bs at historically low levels anyway, EDDC bosses have rubbished allegations that the town’s new Premier Inn is being lined up to use for such a purpose.

NONSENSE

"Claims that plans are afoot for EDDC to ask Premier Inn to help house the homeless are fanciful nonsense," said Cllr Jill Elson, EDDC Cabinet Member for Sustainable Homes and Communities. "We have certainly not...

Funding boost to tackle homelessness and empty homes blight

Homeless people in Teignbridge are being given the chance to live in their own home after Teignbridge District Council gained a £100,000 Government funding boost. Teignbridge has been given the Empty Homes Programme funding by the Homes and Communities Agency to bring empty homes back into use as affordable properties. Teignbridge was one of 10 authorities in the South West to benefit from the funding announced by Communities Minister Don Foster today (Thursday June 20). The council’s housing team will be working with private sector landlords to bring empty properties and commercial...

Exeter charity say IDS has "no idea" about poverty

An Exeter charity has described claims by work and pensions minister Ian Duncan Smith that he could live on £53 a week as “ridiculous and insensitive”. Matt Bell, chief executive of Exeter Community Initiatives, a charity that runs projects to help people facing poverty and homelessness, was speaking following a meeting of organisers of the city’s soup kitchens. “I think it is incredibly insensitive for a man like Ian Duncan Smith to claim he knows what it feels like to live in poverty. It’s ridiculous,” he said. “I don’t think he knows what real poverty is.” Yesterday a petition of almost...

Homeless charity appeals for volunteers

A homeless charity aiming to set up a community in Exeter has made an appeal for volunteers and support.

Emmaus is a national organisation with many high profile supporters such as Terry Waite and the Duchess of Cornwall. Trustee Louise Toomer was speaking at a ‘High Tea and Talk’ event organised by Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI), a charity that runs community projects to support people facing poverty and homelessness, held at St Sidwell’s Community Centre last week.
