There was standing room only at a public meeting organised by KONP South West and 38 Degrees in Exeter on Monday evening.
The packed meeting heard from five keynote speakers who described the threats now faced by the NHS. They then suggested ways in which the fight to protect the NHS could be taken forward. These will involve action that individuals can take, as well as group activities. All the proposals were received enthusiastically.
The Exeter meeting was the third to be held in Devon, bringing together signatories of the 38 Degrees online petitions aimed at the new...
Thousands of people are at risk of stroke because they fail to recognise the signs of a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA, also known as mini-stroke), according to the findings of a new poll(i) launched today on World Stroke Day (29th October 2012).
A Stroke Association survey of over 183 members of the public in the South West, conducted by ICM Research, revealed that:
Over two thirds (68%) of people did not recognise the symptoms of a TIA, with over a quarter (29%) believing they were symptoms of a heart attack.
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will next week take evidence from leading experts on heart disease, eye conditions and Parkinson's disease. They want to hear what questions most concern the public, using the social media website www.twitter.com
The Session is part of the Committee's inquiry into Regenerative Medicine and the Committee are asking the public to tweet questions using the hashtag #RegenMedQs by 2pm on Friday 26th October. The aim of the session is to help sift the hype from the reality when it comes to the prospects of regenerative medicine...
Eyewitnesses report more than 200 people currently protesting outside the newly-opened Marie Stopes clinic in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The clinic is the first in Northern Ireland offering the legal termination of pregnancies.

The Marie Stopes clinic has said it will carry out medical, not surgical, procedures only up to nine weeks gestation and only within the existing legal framework. In Northern Ireland...
As students begin their university and college terms this month, they are very likely to be preoccupied with new timetables and meeting new and old friends, rather than worrying about domestic duties such as cleaning rotas, bills or crucially, fire safety.
When living away from home, whether in shared or rented accommodation for the very first time, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of student life. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are urging all students to take some time to think about fire safety and to take personal responsibility for protecting...
I am proud to be offering a two-day mental Health First Aid workshop on the 26th and 27th of March. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health allowing them to understand when someone may be developing or struggling with a mental health issue.
MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. It is a practical skills and awareness course designed to provide a deeper...
Figures from the Office for National Statistics predict that by 2039, 30% of the UK population will be aged over 60. Whilst our life expectancy continues to rise (an average of 81 years old), our healthy life expectancy has not risen as quickly (65 years old). In light of this, new research from leading nutrition charity the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) has explored how we feel about ageing, as a nation.
The Institute’s research of 2,000 over 30’s across the UK found that 62% of people think that looking young on the surface is a strong indicator that they are fighting off...
Caravans and campervans increasingly resemble a home away from home and it can be easy to forget about the potential fire risks, especially when you’re busy enjoying some time out.
Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service remind you that having a working smoke alarm in your caravan dwelling, is just as important as the one in your home. It needs to be tested frequently to check it works.
In a fire, caravans and campervans have limited escape options in fire and being made of lightweight and highly combustible fittings, fires can take off frightenly fast. You would...
