Exeter leads the way in green energy

Exeter is one of over 50 UK cities that has pledged to be run entirely on green energy by 2050.

The City Council has joined the likes of London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and Leeds to make the environmental commitment to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions.

Exeter's pledge comes ahead of crucial international climate change talks in Paris next month (December).

In Exeter, the City Council is already well ahead of the game in terms of its green credentials and is on track to make hundreds of thousands of pounds of savings by delivering low cost energy...

Trust marks ten years of green standard

A major local charity is marking a decade of environmental quality. Paignton Zoo Environmental Park has held the 14001 accreditation since 2005. Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall, also parts of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, which runs Paignton Zoo, have held the standard nearly as long.

The Trust’s Environmental Officer Pete Morgan said: “The ten year anniversary of our 14001 accreditation is quite a landmark. You have to improve each year, so we have been moving forward all that time. ISO14001 is an international standard with an external audit system...

Solar panels on Exeter car parks a UK first

The installation of solar panels on top of Exeter car parks is a UK first.

The pioneering initiative at John Lewis and Mary Arches Street Car Parks is being delivered by Devon firm Sungift Energy on behalf of Exeter City Council.

Once in place it will provide a gross income of over £50,000 per annum, generating 285,227 kwh per year of electricity and saving more than 150 tonnes of carbon.

Two arrested after PCSO assaulted in Exeter

Two men have been arrested following reports of disorderly behaviour in Exeter.

Police officers were called to the Cathedral Green on Tuesday 4 August shortly before 7.15pm after a group were reportedly acting in a disorderly manner in a local restaurant.

When officers arrived to speak to the group, a man became aggressive and allegedly assaulted a male PCSO by pushing him to the floor.

Two men were arrested at the scene.

A 20-year-old man from Oxford was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a PCSO and taken to Heavitree Road police station.

Campaigners protest over bus service cuts

Devon County Councillors were met with a colourful and noisy protest by campaigners today as they met to agree £1.7m cuts to County bus services.

Councillors were greeted with a new version of the well-known children’s song, ‘The wheels on the bus’!

Sunny outlook for Cranbrook’s Younghayes Centre

Cranbrook’s Younghayes Centre will soon be generating its own electricity and creating a pot of money to help the growing community after E.ON paid for solar PV panels to be installed.

Voluntary group Community Helpers in Cranbrook (CHIC) approached energy company E.ON and East Devon District Council and proposed utilising the roof space on the Younghayes centre to generate renewable energy and both organisations were keen to help make the idea a reality.

Stagecoach South West today announced plans for its seventh annual Green Week programme with a call for joint action to tackle the growing challenge of climate change.

SMEs have poor green credentials

One in five (21 per cent) SMEs in the South West say they do not understand the commercial benefits of being environmentally responsible according to a new study from Lloyds Bank.

One in ten (8 per cent) admit that they are not doing enough to make their businesses environmentally responsible.

Despite this, a third (35 per cent) of small businesses say better environmental practices are a top three priority for 2015.
