PenCarrie celebrates 25 years of business in the heart of Devon

Mid-Devon based garment distributor PenCarrie celebrated last month with a party to mark its 25th year in business.

Starting out on Marsh Barton Trading Estate in Exeter before moving to Sowton Industrial Estate and now based in Willand, PenCarrie is a truly local business, set up and still owned by Paul Persey and his family. The business is one of the largest trade suppliers to the garment decoration industry in the country and is a large employer in Devon.

Knock Out Challenge 2016 will take place on Saturday 3rd September. Come and take part in this amazing day filled with wet and dry obstacles to jump over, jump through and run around!

The entry price will be £30 per person and teams of 10 are required.

Superfast broadband for more rural areas

The Connecting Devon and Somerset partnership (CDS) has launched a procurement exercise to extend the second phase of the superfast broadband scheme.

This £39.5m public sector investment will deliver Next Generation Access broadband services (a minimum of 30 Mbps) and ultrafast broadband (of speeds greater than 100 Mbps) to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across Devon and Somerset in predominantly rural areas.

The tax-payer subsidised programme aims to bring faster broadband to areas unlikely to benefit from wholly commercial operations.

Exeter Cathedral has re-opened its North Tower to visitors as part of the annual Tower Tour programme. The tours take guests up 175 stone stairs to one the city’s most-famous vantage points, offering unrivalled views out to Dartmoor and along the Exe Estuary towards Exmouth.

Changes to Bridge Road to be introduced

The left turn from Bridge Road into Countess Wear Road will be permanently closed from Thursday (14 July).

The change in access to the road is part of Devon County Council’s Bridge Road improvements, and is being introduced ahead of work starting on the new Countess Wear foot and cycle bridge

In the short term the new arrangements will be imposed with barriers and cones but, longer term, the junction will be reconstructed to prevent vehicles turning left off Bridge Road, which will allow more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Public invited to view updated plans for £75m Princesshay extension

The Princesshay Partnership will be holding a public exhibition on 22 and 23 July to set out its detailed plans for a £75m leisure extension to Princesshay Shopping Centre.

The plans, which were given the go ahead by Exeter City Council in January 2016, would see part of the current bus and coach station site transformed into new restaurants, shops and a cinema, set within substantially revitalised public spaces, including an outdoor amphitheatre.

Route 25 JCB comes to Princesshay

The Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cynthia Thompson, came to view the ‘Route 25’ JCB today (Monday 11th) at Princesshay Exeter.

This specially decorated JCB is visiting 25 towns and cities across the South West to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), and is encouraging donations from the public following its theme: ‘Change for Life, Note the Difference’. Kidney specialists at the RD&E are putting on a series of public information events about a transportable dialysis treatment that could give renal patients a new lease of life.

The events will demonstrate how a transportable haemodialysis machine can be easily installed at home or even taken on holiday or in a camper van-style vehicle – freeing-up dialysis patients from the burden of frequent and time-consuming hospital visits and allowing them to win back more control over their lives following the trauma of kidney failure.

Councils meet to discuss future of Port Royal

Since the beginning of the year, informal discussions have been held between Sidmouth Town Council (STC) and East Devon District Council (EDDC) on carrying out a scoping exercise as the first stage in the process of development and renewal of Sidmouth’s Port Royal and Eastern Town.
