Exeter projects hit the jackpot

New figures show that more than £2.1 million of National Lottery funding was awarded across Exeter last year alone. 59 National Lottery grants were given out in the city during 2016; providing a vital boost to arts, sports and heritage projects alongside community groups helping those most in need. A wide variety of local projects received National Lottery grants last year, including:

  • £4,655 to Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education to set up an active and outdoor community club for families.
  • £9,000 to Exeter University Trampoline Club so more people can go

Digital Minister praises Cyber Security Week

There’s been more praise for Exeter businesses organising this week’s Cyber Security Awareness Week.

The Minister of State for Digital and Culture, Matt Hancock has sent a message congratulating them on taking the problem head on.

‘It’s great to see businesses in Exeter and the south West getting together to tackle this growing area of concern,’ he said

Mr Hancock said cyber security is a top government priority, with a £1.9 billion investment to make the UK the safest place to live and do business online. He urged all businesses to take up free advice and training...

A leading local law firm, which was recently named UK Law Firm of the Year, has been shortlisted for a hat-trick of national awards. Checks on single person council tax discounts

People in Exeter who are receiving a single person’s discount on their council tax but shouldn’t be are being urged to let the City Council know about their change in circumstances.

Those who receive a 25 per cent reduction on their bill as single occupancy residents will soon be checked to make sure that the reductions are correct.

The checks form part of the Council’s measures to prevent and detect fraud and protect the public purse.

Exeter School team makes it into F1 in Schools Final for second year running

An Exeter School F1 in Schools team is in the hot-seat after winning three trophies in the Regional Final held at South Devon University Technical College, earning them a place in the National Final. This is the second year the co-educational independent school has qualified for the National Final which takes place in March.

The team called Vulcan won a place in the National Final after coming first in the Development Class as well as earning trophies for Fastest Development Class Car and Best Engineered Development Class Car.

Devon volunteers take on Arctic Challenge

Whatever weather the rest of winter throws at us, six volunteers with the local Samaritans charity are well prepared - because they’ve encountered temperatures down to minus 20 degrees Celsius, dug snow holes, and driven huskies.

The six volunteers, who live in Exeter and East Devon and are supporters of the local Samaritans branch, have just completed an Arctic Survival Challenge at Raftlaven in the northern Swedish wilderness, miles from the nearest settlement.

Canon Professor Elaine Graham, who holds positions at the University of Chester and Chester Cathedral, will give the Cathedral’s Spring Lecture on the topic “Speaking of God in a world troubled by religion” (21st February 2017 at 19.30)
