Plans to close Exeter Bus Station temporarily on hold

EXETER City Council has revealed that it is putting plans to close Exeter Bus Station temporarily on hold.

The council said it needs more time before appointing contractors to create its part of a major new redevelopment at the bus station site.

It had planned to start construction on the state-of-the-art new leisure complex St Sidwell’s Point, and a new Exeter Bus Station, at the end of March. Completion was due in December 2018.

Exeter businesses Slingshot Six Ltd, Wellity and Speedy Freight Exeter have made it to the final of Devon’s Fast Track to Growth Programme.

Fifteen companies across the county have been selected from over 60 entries to the free business support programme backed by Devon County Council, to help them develop their plans for growth in 2017. The next generation of construction specialists studying at Exeter College had a behind-the-scenes tour of an innovative low energy building project.

Seventeen first-year students studying for their Construction and the Built Environment BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma visited the development next to Rennes House, Whipton, in Exeter. The project is being built on behalf of Exeter City Council.

Fourth successive year of growth at Exeter Airport

Exeter Airport has notched up its fourth successive year of growth in 2016 with passenger numbers up to 847,372.

Latest CAA figures show that 25,583 more passengers used Exeter last year, up 3% on the year before. The figures include the airport’s best August in eight years, when more than 100,000 people passed through the terminal.

But the strongest growth was in November and December, up 11% and 13% respectively on the back of new winter sun flights to Alicante and Malaga in Spain, which started at the end of October.

Cash boost for deaf football coaches

Deaf footballers in Exeter hoping to become coaches have been given a £1,000 boost to help pay for sign language interpreters.

Exeter City Football in the Community have a deaf football team known as Exeter City Knights who train weekly and play in monthly Ability Counts tournaments.

Some of the players are keen to become coaches but need support to take the FA courses.

Housebuilder Persimmon Homes South West has stepped in with a £1,000 donation to help pay for two sign language interpreters to translate alongside FA Tutors during the course.

Wildlife gardening at Cranbrook this weekend

Cranbrook Country Park is hosting a wildlife gardening session this Saturday morning, February 25.

The session will take place between 10am and 12pm; families are invited to take part in building homes for the wildlife in the area.

Children will have the opportunity to create bird feeders for their own gardens and build a safe environment for bees using a baked bean tin and bamboo.

There will also be the chance to help build a bug hotel which is made from leftover materials.
