Jeff Stokes from Exeter has found a sense of purpose and renewed self-confidence from volunteering with local charity Hospiscare. Five years ago Jeff, who is now 67, retired early from a busy job with South West Water. Having been unwell for a while with a persistent cough, Jeff made the decision to leave work and investigate his ill health further. After seeing various specialists a tumour was discovered on one of Jeff’s tonsils and subsequently he was given the devastating diagnosis of having head and neck cancer.

Dogs living in South West have longer walks, survey shows

Dogs living in the South West of England are more likely to have longer walks than the national average, according to a new survey.

The survey, of more than 3,000 dog-owners across the country, showed that 38% of dogs have a walk of longer than an hour, compared to 35% nationally.

The survey was commissioned in the lead up to the RSPCA’s Big Walkies challenge in October, which invites people to walk 10,000 steps a day, with or without a dog, to raise money for animals in need. The results also found that 22% of dogs in the region have three walks a day - while almost 7%...

Grenadier unveils EPC A+ sustainable development in Exeter

Grenadier, an Exeter-based sustainable property developer, has funded the development of Emperor House, the company’s first EPC A+ rated office building located in Exeter Business Park, one of the city’s vibrant business hubs.

For a building to achieve an EPC A+ rating it must have the best insulation, be energy efficient and produce clean energy which will be consumed on site.

Emperor House is a three-storey, fully serviced 22,500 sq ft building featuring a highly insulated cladding system, LED lighting and a roof top solar installation with a capacity of 128kW.

RMT confirms strike action on Stagecoach South West buses

Bus Workers Union RMT has confirmed that members on Stagecoach South West buses will be mounting a major programme of strike action in a fight for pay and workplace justice.

RMT’s executive has taken the decision to call on all our Stagecoach South West Exeter, Torquay and Barnstaple members to take industrial action as a result of the company’s abject failure to address pay and conditions issues at the heart of this dispute.

Lord Mayor witnesses innovative maths and science curriculum at Exeter school

Exeter’s Lord Mayor has witnessed the innovative curriculum at a city school which is leading the way in teaching science and maths.

Teenagers from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset all attend the Exeter Mathematics School, a state-funded sixth form for mathematicians which is sponsored by the University of Exeter and Exeter College.

Pupils work with university academics and companies such as Dyson and the National Hydrographic Office to complete research into topics such as autonomous flight, artificial gills and neurons.

This is a beautiful ten-mile walk along the Exe Estuary Trail starting at Exeter Quay and finishing at Exmouth.

The walk is flat and mainly on public footpaths or cycling trails and so it is ideal for families and a range of abilities. As the walk is along the Exe there are various train stations en route, so the walk can be shortened if desired. Puffing Billy in Exton are kindly allowing use of their pub as a lunch stop and a rest.

There are frequent buses and trains back to Exeter along the route to Exmouth.

A roofing supplies business which set up its first store in February has launched its second location in Exeter, creating seven new jobs.

Roofbase has opened an 800 ft² shop, with a 13,500 ft² warehouse and a 6,000 ft² yard in Marsh Barton Trading Estate.

Wealth manager Charles Stanley is celebrating a successful first decade in Exeter, with total funds managed by the branch rising to over £700m for the first time.

A £1 million flood prevention scheme in Axminster has been completed.

The Devon County Council scheme in Willhay Lane, which has widened and realigned the Millbrook culvert to improve its capacity and flow of water, now provides vital protection to over 160 homes. A new structure has fully enclosed part of the flood prone channel and earlier phases of the scheme enabled the construction of a flood defence wall and the installation of a ‘tree-catcher’ debris grill upstream of the culvert beneath Willhay Lane.
