Devon Libraries celebrate World Book Night

Book lovers in Devon are being invited to celebrate World Book Night at the County Council’s libraries next week.

Each year World Book Night organisers recruit 20,000 volunteers to hand out 20 copies of their favourite book from the World Book Night list to members of their community who don’t regularly read.

Police family on the road for charity

An Okehampton officer and his two brothers will be heading straight for success with a 230-mile charity walk next month. Neighbourhood beat manager Matt Evans will be treking the Fosse Way Roman Road with his brother Steve, a police fingerprint expert, and Barry, a care home manager, in aid of two charities. The trio will set off from Lincoln on 13 May and aim to average more than 20 miles a day to reach Exeter on 22 May. Dorrian departs Exeter Chiefs for London Irish

Exeter Chiefs can confirm today that fly-half Myles Dorrian will be leaving the club at the end of the season to join up with Aviva Premiership rivals London Irish on a two-year deal. Devon County Council’s Library Service has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

Award will link business with academia

A University of Exeter Medical School scientist has received a prestigious Industry Fellowship award, aimed at connecting Academia and Industry. Andrew Randall, Professor of Applied Neurophysiology in the Institute of Biomedical and Clinical Science, was granted the award by the Royal Society. Spring Clean-up at St David's churchyard

Today (April 13) saw St David's churchyard getting a spring clean. Trees were lopped and cut back hard, hedges pruned, grass - and even primroses - strimmed. There were also a number of objects retrieved from the undergrowth, including some night storage heaters, cast iron pipe and a heap of discarded bottles and cans. A local leading charity is planning to brighten up 12 of the city’s public spaces by creating a series of beautiful urban wildflower meadows.

Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) is beginning work this month to add colour to Exeter’s city streets.
