Defra appoints academic to oversee flood risks in South West

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has appointed an academic from the University of Exeter to Chair the South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC). Professor Robert Van de Noort’s appointment is a reflection of his extensive research in the dynamics of coasts, rivers and peatlands, and how people have interacted with these landscapes over a period of more than 10,000 years, in addition to his various roles across the sector. Police and Crime Commissioner launches small grants scheme

Community groups in Devon and Cornwall are being given the chance to share in a £100,000 cashpot.

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has earmarked the cash to help small community groups whose work focuses on reducing crime and making people feel safer.

The PCC’s small grants scheme (SGS) supports the pledge to put charitable and community organisations at the heart of policing which Mr Hogg set out in his Police and Crime Plan .

Police appeal after animals attacked and killed in Teign Valley

Police investigating three cases of animals being killed and mutilated in Teign Valley near Exeter are appealing for information. The first incident happened in the Bridford area of Teign Valley between 8.30pm on Friday 12 July and 12.30pm on Saturday 13 July, where a number of animals were killed or harmed. Four ducks were killed, a chicken went missing and a horse’s shoe was removed inhumanly. A goat’s horn was also damaged leaving the goat in pain and it needed to be seen by a vet. Dog owners encouraged to ‘paws’ for thought when walking in the countryside

With the August bank holiday drawing ever closer, NFU Mutual is urging dog owners to follow the Countryside Code and keep their pets under control whilst walking in the countryside near livestock and horses. According to a recent report by Farmers’ Guardian, dog attacks on livestock increased from 691 in 2011 to 739 in 2012. Sheep were involved in most cases, with many being attacked, injured or killed. More than 450 incidents of dog attacks on horses have also been recorded on The British Horse Society’s accident reporting website www.horseaccidents.co.uk since it was launched in November...

Firefighters take on John O Groats to Land's End cycle ride

Four firefighters are attempting the challenging bike ride from John O Groats to Land's End over a period of nine days.

They plan to set off on 3 September and hope to raise money for the The Fire Fighters Charity and Motor Neurone Disease Research.

Taking part are Adam Mckee and James Davey from Middlemoor in Exeter, Lee Foreman from Taunton and Tom Statton from Crownhill in Plymouth.

Friends Evening Lecture Wartime Renaissance: Art in Britain 1939-45

Dr Anthony Kelly will explain that, unexpectedly, art prospered in Britain during the Second World War. Kenneth Clark’s ‘official’ war art was exhibited in the National Gallery with a classical ‘painting of the month’. His Recording Britain displayed tranquil landscapes, some in Devon. Large audiences also saw many independent exhibitions nationwide, providing inspiration in the dark days of war.

Dawlish Celebrates

An afternoon of fun for all the family featuring performances from Exeter Pipes & Drums, Footlights, Dawlish Dancers, Taekwondo, and live music as well as face painting, balloon modeling, stalls and rides. There will also be competitions for children and adults, from noon-5pm. All free.
