Local art goes to The Mall

The work of one of the artists featured in last year’s Local Art Show has been selected for an exhibition at the Mall Galleries in Central London and is in the running for the £30,000 Threadneedle Prize.

A book of etchings by Christow-based artist Jude Freeman was selected from over three and a half thousand works; several of the etchings were first displayed at The Royal Albert Memorial Musuem.

The exhibition runs from Wednesday 25 September to Saturday 12 October 2013, the shortlist for the award will be announced on Thursday 15 August and the winner announced on Tuesday...

Forty years ago saw the release of a record that would bridge the generation gap and become a rock anthem to both young and old – ’20th Century Boy’ was written and composed by Marc Bolan, who with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic of the original glam rock era. With Bolan’s special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs throughout the 1970s including ‘Telegram Sam’ and ‘Jeepster’ he was able to obtain what would be yet another Top 20 record later in 1976 that has since become one of the most memorable and everlasting signature tunes, ‘I Love to Boogie’.

The musical follows Miss Babs’ struggle to keep her antiques business open, as shop after shop in the High Street is forced out by faceless chains…

Can she afford to turn down the offer from The Guilty Bean if they do update the shop, can they still afford to employ Mrs Overall? Will Mr Clifford ever get his memory back, and remember who he’s engaged to? But most worryingly, will Mrs Overall be able to tap dance while holding the tray?

Mal Evans was the Beatles roadie, but he was also their closest friend, he toured the world with them, took part on their recording sessions and films. He was there when they met Bob Dylan and Elvis. He was their protector when their lives were threatened in the Philippines and present when they studied with Maharishi in India. He even lived with Paul McCartney as his housekeeper in 1967 and there is good reason to believe he helped write the title song of ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts’ Club Band!

The FB Pocket Orchestra takes its listeners back to the hot jazz, blues, ragtime and popular dances of the 1920/30s & earlier.

The Orchestra features a unique line-up of strings, brass, reeds, guitar, percussion and vocals drawing repertoire from blues, jazz, ragtime and dance music from the early 1900s. Arrangements are all written by band members especially to invoke the spirit of the period and stay resolutely in step with current trends.
