Work starts soon on Honiton’s new skate park

Work will start soon on building a fabulous new £90,000 skate park in Honiton – designed by the users. The existing park will close on 17 February for around 10 weeks while the work is carried out.

East Devon District Council (EDDC), and young people from Honiton Youth Centre and Honiton Community College have been working together since July 2013 to design the improvements to the facility in Allhallows Field that skate park users have asked for.

Friends take on the Channel Swim in local pool

Two friends from Exeter, Suzanne Lovelace and Sadie Evans, landlady at The Royal Oak, St Thomas, are taking on the ‘Channel Challenge’ throughout February to raise money for local charity, Hospiscare.

The English Channel stretches 21 miles between Dover and Calais and the friends will be swimming the equivalent distance at local pool The Riverside, covering 1,408 lengths each.

Suzanne and Sadie, who met whilst swimming at The Riverside, struck up a friendship and when Suzanne asked Sadie if she wanted to join her challenge, she couldn’t say no.

Marmite 'unfit for sale' in Canada

Bad news for Canadian anglophiles as the Canadian government suddenly declares several popular British foods unfit for sale. Products such as Marmite, Lucozade, Penguin Bars, Bovril and Ovaltine are all apparently enriched with too many vitamins and minerals, while other products, such as beef stock and canned soup, contain too much animal product. The move has affected speciality stores across the Great White North many which rely on the products to make a living. Mercury Music Prize nominee and Devon born Folk singer/songwriter Seth Lakeman will be visiting HMV in Exeter on Friday 7 February to celebrate the release of his new album Word of Mouth.

Recorded in a Cornish Church, Word of Mouth showcases Seth's skill as a storyteller while the dramatic and melodic sound cements his status as a figurehead of contemporary British Folk.

Exeter Library opening date revealed

Visitors are expected to flock to Exeter Library on Thursday 22 May, when Devon County Council’s multi-million pound refurbishment is finally revealed.

The opening date is announced this week in a special report to Councillors of the Exeter Board ahead of its meeting on Monday 27 January.

The County Council report follows public consultation on Exeter Library, as well as Pinhoe, St Thomas and Topsham libraries, which drew 555 responses.

As a result, St Thomas library will open for longer while the £4.1 million refurbished Exeter Library will open 58 hours per week,...

There’s the possibility of further flooding tomorrow as the Mt Office issue yet another weather warning for in Devon. Bands of rain are expected to move eastwards across southwest England during Fridaywith up to 20mm of rain expected across most of Devon

Councils consider volunteer run parks

Parks and open spaces in Exeter could increasingly be managed by community groups as local authorities receive less and less funding, the City Council has announced.

Exeter City Council has invited groups and individuals across the city to discuss opportunities for local management or ownership of key areas of public open space in Exeter in the near future.

The council hopes the initiative will see local groups wanting to be more 'hands-on' and have more control of parks and green spaces in their communities.
