£31.1 million for rail resilience will be found

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has today confirmed that the £31.1m promised to improve the resilience of the South West’s rail network will be found. Ten projects to improve the rail networks resilience against flooding will be funded with the money including for work in Honiton, Cowley Bridge Junction, Crewkerne and several other areas of rail vulnerable to potential flooding. Exeter High Street was closed by emergency services earlier today after debris fell from the roof of the Lakeland building. A police cordon was erected around the building to clear the pavement whilst fire crews checked the roof via an extending ladder. Debris from the guttering of the Lakeland building is thought to have been blown loose by extremely strong winds in today’s storm.

Winds are though to have reached between 50-60mph in the city and up to 80mph in more exposed areas of the Devon coast. City Centre Buses have been diverted from the high street until the building is...

Hurricane-force winds to hit South West

The Met Office warned that hurricane strength winds of up to 80mph will hit the South West again today to again test the regions already battered storm defences.

In the fifth consecutive day of extreme weather conditions the public has been told to prepare for even more flooding, transport disruption and power outages across Devon.

The winds will reach their peak at mid-day today as the weather system pass over the county but potential hail storms and heavy rain can still be expected until much later in the day.

When Rob Gillett, from Bridgend, tipped the scales at 41 stone 10lbs, he knew that if he didn't lose weight soon, his life would be in grave danger. At just 25 years old, his BMI was a staggering 104 (the healthy range is between 18-25), and doctors were becoming increasingly concerned about his health. Conservation project turns the city wild

An Exeter-based conservation project has spent the winter months working with local communities to produce a greener city.

Exeter Wild City, a joint project between Devon Wildlife Trust and Exeter City Council, has had a busy winter preparing for the approaching spring. In the last few months more than thousand local people have helped to plant over 1,000 trees, create 10 orchards and plant 10 new wildflower meadows.

Following the success of local “Teign-star” Luke Friend, winner of the national TeenStar Competition 2013 and finalist in last year’s X Factor, the TeenStar Competition 2014 has decided to start their new search in Exeter.

Initially hosting auditions on 8 February, Teen Star have unearthed more new local talent and the successful performers will compete at the SouthWest Regional Final live show at the Corn Exchange Venue on the afternoon of Saturday 30 March 2014.

Teams needed for Pancake World Championship

Princesshay will host the inaugural World Pancake Racing Championships on Shrove Tuesday (4 March).

Local businesses, organisations and individuals are now being invited to demonstrate their pancake flipping credentials by entering a team of between two and four members.

The Pancake World Championship is a partnership between local Event Management company Wacky Nation and Princesshay, to raise funds for local charity Dream-A-Way, Princesshay’s charity of the year for 2014. It will be hosted by Radio Exe.
