Teams wanted for Pancake World Championship

On your marks, get set…Toss!

On Shrove Tuesday (Tuesday 17th February), Princesshay will host the second World Pancake Racing Championships.

Local businesses, organisations and clubs are now being invited to demonstrate their flipping credentials by entering a team of between two and four members for this fun and entertaining contest.

The relay race involves each team member running along a short course before flipping a pancake four times. Eagle-eyed officials will be checking that the flipping is done properly. Speed, skill, dexterity and co-ordination will be key...

Unemployment continues to fall in Devon

The number of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) claimants in Devon has once again fallen during December (in line with the national trend), reaching a new lowest figure on record.

Total claimants now stand at 3,998, 21 claimants fewer than in November (a 0.5% month on month drop). Whilst the fall is lower than the UK average of 2.9%, as a proportion of the working age population, Devon remains far lower at 0.9%, compared to the UK at 2%.

At a district level, JSA claimant numbers fell for six of Devon’s eight districts by an average of 3.4%; the largest drop was in the South Hams...

Spacex, an internationally renowned contemporary art organisation, based on Preston Street, Exeter, has this week shared its plans on how it is hoping to take the organisation into a new and exciting phase.

Following the temporary closure of its gallery at the end of last year, due to funding cuts by the Arts Council, Spacex’s management team have been engaged in thorough consultations with members of the art community and partnership organisations to help devise a sustainable, long-term strategy for the organisation.

Tributes to man killed in Colyton collision

A man who died in a collision in Colyton has been named as Richard Daniel Manley, aged 43.

Richard grew up in Plymouth, but has lately been living in Seaton with his young family.

Richard was described by his family as loving father, brother and son who was very proud of his time serving in 26 Royal Engineers. He was always willing to help anyone in need and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. He was a genuinely good guy, with a heart of gold who will be sorely missed by all his family and friends.

Cash boost for young entrepreneurs

Devon County Council has awarded £113,000 worth of funding to Schools across Devon through its Enterprise in Schools Grant programme to help encourage entrepreneurship.

The programme is designed to help Devon’s schools create or expand educational opportunities within the areas of enterprise and innovation for both pupils and staff, and is informed by the ‘Enterprise for All’ report.

It will enable schools to provide a better balance between education and skills for employment and aims to equip young people with the motivation and confidence to work for themselves.
