Bicton Arena stages spectacular first international competition

Devon’s first ever international horse trials drew plaudits from spectators and competitors alike following three days of intense competition which took place at Bicton Arena in East Devon at the weekend.

Organiser Helen West, who also manages the arena, had added an international class to Bicton’s schedule to provide Westcountry-based riders with the opportunity to ride at that level. She also wanted to make it a spectacle for visitors and used the main showjumping arena, which has its own natural amphitheatre, to position several new cross country fences.

Exeter drugs gang jailed

Members of an Exeter drugs gang, intent on flooding the streets of the South West with amphetamines, have today been jailed for more than 18 years.

Bret Seldon, Shaun Greenham, Marc Smith and Gary Turley, all from Exeter, plus Richard Armitage from Holsworthy were sentenced to a total of 18 years and 10 months imprisonment by Exeter Crown Court.

The five men were all convicted of conspiracy to supply amphetamine and Armitage and Turley were also charged with conspiracy to supply cannabis.

Exeter Lobster completes London Marathon

Loulou the Lobster, from Exeter completed the London Marathon in six and a half hours on Sunday!

Rachel Marshall a 39-year-old Mortgage Adviser ran the London Marathon on 26 April dressed as a lobster, to raise money for national deafblind charity Sense.

Rachel said: “It was challenging currying around a heavy, warm costume whilst running 26.2 miles, but it was great seeing everyone smile and cheering on the giant lobster scurrying past!”

New South Devon Walking Festival

The Dartmouth Steam Railway, First Great Western and the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership have joined forces to launch a new South Devon Walking Festival which will take place between 9th and 17th May.

The Festival aims to encourage people to try one or more of the self-guided walks from Paignton, Torquay, and Kingswear stations contained in the “Walks from the Riviera Line” or the Dartmouth Steam Railway’s “Railway Walks” booklets which are available from local staffed railway stations or online.

Childhood obesity: One epidemic or two?

New research has indicated that obesity in children has quite different causes at different ages.

The research, led by the University of Exeter Medical School and part of the internationally respected EarlyBird Study, could have far-reaching implications for attempts to reduce the global epidemic of childhood obesity, as it indicates that very different approaches may be needed at various stages of development.

A brush with the past at A la Ronde

Have you ever bought a postcard as a souvenir of a visit? Over two hundred years ago, cousins Jane and Mary Parminter from A la Ronde did just that.

While on their grand tour of Europe they collected 39 Gouaches and a fan from Mount Vesuvius. These will be on display at the 16-sided property throughout May as part of a ‘Hidden House’ programme which showcases items in the collection that visitors cannot usually see.

50% of drivers admit flouting road laws

A report released today (28 April 2015) by road safety charity Brake and Direct Line has revealed worrying and widespread disregard for traffic laws among UK drivers, with half (49%) admitting to breaking them.

Half of drivers who admit breaking traffic laws (25% of all drivers) say they do so through inattention, while the other half (23% of all drivers) admit doing so deliberately, because they think they can get away with it or do not agree with the laws.
