Funds to improve 'unacceptable' 101 service

Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner is ring fencing up to £250,000 for the Chief Constable to make immediate improvements to the 101 non emergency phone line. The commitment comes as Tony Hogg publishes phase two of his office’s ongoing review into the 101 service, a report which also assesses the force’s progress against the initial findings from a year ago. The main findings of the report are:

  • The average call waiting time for non urgent matters has almost doubled to more than 8 minutes
  • The percentage of callers waiting for more than 10 minutes

700 more Exeter streetlights to go part-time

Around 700 streetlights in residential streets in Heavitree and Whipton Barton will be converted to part-night lighting from Monday 18 January.

The converted streetlights, previously on all-night, will be switched off from about 12:30am to 5:30am, before coming on again at dawn.

The change is part of Devon County Council’s (DCC) on-going programme to reduce costs and carbon emissions across the county.

Lighting on main and on the busiest roads, local footpaths and walk-home routes will remain on all night.

Baxter updates on injury front

Jack Nowell’s knee injury will not require surgery and is not as bad as first feared, Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has revealed.

But that news has been offset by the revelation that lock Mitch Lees is set for around four months on the sidelines after an operation on his injured arm on Monday.

England back Nowell, 22, hobbled off in some pain with eight minutes left in Saturday’s 19-10 win over Gloucester, having badly twisted his knee in a tackle. He is unlikely to train this week.

Dozens of firefighters tackle pub blaze

Dozens of firefighters are tackling a large thatch blaze at the Ring of Bells pub in North Bovey, Dartmoor.

Fire appliances from across Devon and Somerset were mobilised to reports of the thatch roof alight, shortly after 11.30am today (Wednesday 13 January).

Crews from, Chagford, Bovey Tracey, North Tawton, Newton Abbot, Okehampton, Ashburton, Torquay, Exeter Danes Castle, Totnes and the High Volume Pump from Taunton (crewed by Wellington) are in attendance.
