Somme appeal to help create database of the fallen

People all over the UK are being asked to get involved in an unique and historic art project to commemorate those who fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme through a photographic and detailed legacy of all 19,240 Allied servicemen who lost their lives.

On 1st July 2016, at 0730 hours, exactly 100 years since the whistle was blown to ‘go over the top', 19,240 Shrouds of the Somme will be revealed laid out in Exeter's Northernhay Gardens.

Say NO to doorstep crime

Devon residents are being warned against rogue doorstep traders offering home maintenance services this spring.

In 2015 87 complaints were received by the service in relation to doorstep crime, with an estimate loss of over £101,000.

In March this year six complaints were made and in February an estimated £3,000 was lost by victims, a 100 per cent increase on 2015.

The longer daylight hours often coincide with a rise in complaints made to Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service.

Last April, 10 complaints were made with an estimated £28,000 lost....

Dunsford Show and Horse Show 2016

Honiton play areas to get a £46,000 facelift

Local children at two Honiton primary schools have chosen the designs for eagerly awaited improvements to the Bowling Green - Millers Way and Langford Avenue play areas in Honiton.

East Devon District Council and Honiton Town Council have been working closely to spend £46,850 on improvements to the play areas in the town. Just over £28,000 will be spent at the Bowling Green - Millers Way playing field and a further £18,500 at Langford Avenue.

EXETER CITY's immaculate away run continued as goals from Ollie Watkins and Jake Taylor saw off Yeovil Town at Huish Park.

City made three changes for this one, with Jordan Moore-Taylor back in the starting line-up and taking the captain's armband once again. Hundreds of original paintings will go on display at the Devon Art Society ´s spring exhibition at St. Annes Hall, Babbacombe. There are classical themes covering floral, still-life, figurative and landscape as well as seascape subject matters and some abstracts too. The Devon Art Society of Torquay was founded in 1912 and has a long tradition of exhibiting and selling high quality paintings. Visitors are welcome to talk with the artists to share their impressions as many of the artists will be present throughout the exhibition. Open daily 10am - 6pm Admission is free

Exmouth schoolchildren ride the Avocet Line

Pupils from Marpool Primary School in Exmouth recently took a free train trip on the Avocet Line which links Exmouth and Exeter, to visit Exeter Cathedral as part of their Religious Education studies.

The trip was organised by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership under their “Train trips for schoolchildren” initiative. This aims to introduce more children to rail travel and is run in conjunction with Great Western Railway, who provided free travel for the children and teachers.
