Warning to students after Mumps outbreak at Exeter University

Exeter University has seen an outbreak of Mumps this term, with 16 cases reported in the last week.

This contagious viral infection is most recognisable by the painful swellings located at the side of the face under the ears (the parotid glands), giving a person with mumps a distinctive "hamster face" appearance. Other symptoms include headache, joint pain and a high temperature.

Exeter Uni examines social networking skills of birds

New research carried out by scientists based in Cornwall reveals for the first time the importance of social networking in producing a successful family.

The study found that, regardless of how big and healthy individual chicks are, what really matters to their chances of surviving and breeding is how siblings in the nest interact with each other, with cooperative families faring best.

Exeter University has announced it is working with Coca-Cola on a project which will try to understand household recycling behaviours.

Recycling rates in Great Britain and France remain below most other European countries, despite growing awareness of environmental concerns among consumers.

Only approximately half of plastic bottles are collected for recycling in these countries; as a result, manufacturers face restrictions in the supply of locally available recycled PET.

Fire Service visit INTO Exeter University

In September the population of Exeter increased with the arrival of its 17,000 university students. For Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service students involved in college and university communities have being identified as a high risk group by their Targeting and Evaluation team.

One of the country’s most distinguished living novelists, University of Exeter honorary graduate Hilary Mantel, will read from her latest novel Bring Up the Bodies, sequel to her Man Booker prizewinning Wolf Hall , at a special event hosted by the University of Exeter tonight (October 11).

The event takes place in the Alumni Auditorium, part of the new Forum at the Streatham Campus.

You can join the University of Exeter for a free family fun day as part of its diamond jubilee celebrations, and try your hand at a range of activities ranging from tennis tasters to hands-on experiments.

Negative patient-doctor communication could worsen symptoms

Doctors who unintentionally communicate to patients that they do not believe or understand them could actually make their symptoms worse, a new study suggests.

Research by the University of Exeter Medical School, and the psychology departments at the University of Exeter and University of Southampton published in the American Journal of Medicine, indicates that a type of “nocebo” response – where patients perceive a lack of understanding or acceptance from their doctor – could create anger and distress, physiological conditions that could worsen illness.
