Taking the Mic returns for another evening of have-a-go magic, hosted by performance poets Morwenna Griffiths and Tim King.

Poetry is the mainstay of our show but we also welcome comedy, philosophy, theatrical acts and singer-songwriters. Every performer gets a five minute slot to showcase their talent.

Exeter’s most popular student music collective returns for another eclectic night of electronic music across 4 rooms at Exeter Phoenix.

The Christmas DJ Showcase was quite the climax to a memorable term for underground nightlife in Exeter. Some of the hottest names in dance music performed at the Cavern, the Lemon Grove and Exeter Phoenix including Waze & Odyssey, Sigma, Star Slinger and DJ Zinc. These artists represented different genres in the dance music spectrum and the DJ Showcase aims to represent this diversity across the multiple rooms at Exeter Phoenix.

Shotgun Theatre present Rent at Exeter Phoenix

From the 19-22 January the Exeter Phoenix will be hosting an exciting new production of the musical Rent, produced and performed by the University of Exeter’s Shotgun Theatre Company.

Set in early 1990s Manhattan, Rent tracks the trials and tribulations of several struggling artists living in the island’s East Village. The musical’s narrator is film-maker Mark Cohen who, along with musician Roger Davis, can’t drum up the outstanding rent for their old friend and landlord Benny. As the Exeter Business Improvement District (BID) reaches the next stage in its campaign, those involved in the BID are beginning to explore options with other businesses within the city centre with a view to design, plan, manage and deliver a Business Plan that reflects their business priorities to take the city centre forward for the next five years.

Two Short Nights Film Festival

Two Short Nights is a chance to promote and celebrate short films and those who have created them.

This event prides itself in helping emerging talent in showcase their short films at selected screenings. There is also workshops and the infamous 48 Hour Film Challenge.

The festival will take place on the 11th and 12th December at the Exeter Phoenix.

Sam Sweeney's Fiddle: Made in the Great War

Six years ago Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard.

Research revealed that the violin had been made – but never finished – by a luthier and some-time music hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard. He had been conscripted in 1916 at the age of 35 and two years later was killed during the battle of Messines Ridge. His violin had been left unfinished in his workshop. Following a hugely successful return tour in 2013, Steve Howe returns to the UK in September to play some of his more familiar pieces plus several new tunes like Solitaire from Yes’s Fly From Here album, The Golden Mean and others from Motif, plus various arrangements of Yes songs and other tunes he’s picked up along the way. A few stories thrown in for good measure should ensure a great evening.
