New equipment at Exeter skate park

There’s good news for skate fans with new, temporary equipment installed at Exeter Arena Skate Park.

Work is ongoing but some of the ramps will be available to use this weekend.

Exeter City Council is carrying out the work with Tim Ruck of the Boarding House. When finished the facility will include:

• A flat spine • Wall ride • Grind block • Sub box

Local BMX riders have contributed a flat rail to the park.

Recently the City Council was forced to break up the old skate park on the same site after the equipment had become rotten and dangerous....

Private tenants urged to take part in Exeter survey

People who rent private properties in Exeter are being encouraged to take part in a survey. Everyone who takes part will be entered into a draw to win a £50 High Street voucher.

In Exeter, 22% of people live in private rented homes, which is above the national average.

A number of local agencies receive high numbers of complaints about local letting agents and this has led to a survey being compiled to gain an insight into the true extent of the problem.

Skate fans are to get a new skate park in Exeter.

A new facility is to be built at Arena Park and skaters are being asked to help choose the design by taking part in an online survey.

The old facility was recently broken up and removed after it had become rotten and dangerous. The Council had been hoping to prolong the life of the old facility but it proved beyond repair.

Councillors back latest bus station proposals

Coucillors in Exeter have highlighted plans to progress the long-awaited redevelopment of the city’s bus station site.

At an Extraordinary Meeting at the Guildhall on Thursday night (12 October), they backed a recommendation to close the existing bus station by the end of February 2018 at the latest.

Passengers will be dropped off and picked up on street during the closure, which will allow for a new bus station and major new leisure complex to be built.

The City Council plans to re-tender for a contractor to build these projects, which it is funding, next spring....

Drop in to find out about homelessness

People will be able to find out what’s being done to help those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness at a drop-in event in Exeter on Friday 13 October. The event is being held at Exeter Guildhall between noon and 2pm as part of Homelessness Awareness Week. Exeter and Teignbridge councils have teamed up with a number of partners to highlight all the good work that goes on in the area and raise awareness of homelessness. Don't miss your chance to vote!

People living in Exeter are being urged to complete their electoral registration forms so that they can vote in next year’s City Council elections.

Over 52,000 household enquiry forms went out to all homes in the city at the start of August, followed by reminders in early September. However, there are still 12,000 households which have not completed a return.

This is the final step in compiling and preparing the 2018 Register of Electors for Exeter. People who fail to complete and return the form may not be included on the Register and will lose their right to vote....

Exeter school fines students for graffiti

A group of students have been fined by a language school after they spray-painted graffiti on buildings in Exeter. The students were each fined £75 by the Globe English School in St David’s Hill, Exeter, after they defaced parts of the Quay.

Exeter City Council, who were called in to remove the graffiti, said the money - £1,125 in total – would go towards the cost of chemicals used to remove graffiti in the city. New fire safety management policy for Exeter City Council housing stock

Exeter City Council is looking at bringing in a new fire safety management policy for its housing stock. The local authority is looking closely at escape routes in flats and ensuring that they are kept free of clutter. Personal belongings placed in escape routes can hinder evacuation in the event of a fire as well as prevent fire and rescue officers from accessing areas of the building. Work required on Topsham Lock

Work needs to be carried out to an old disused lock on Exeter Ship Canal, the City Council has revealed. Steel sheet piling which was installed in the early 1970s to prevent the waters of the Canal escaping into the River Exe is showing signs of age and needs to be repaired. A more detailed inspection including ground investigation and access improvements which will lead to remedial work has been authorised to take place this month, under delegated powers. IKEA jobs up for grabs at new Exeter Jobs Fair

IKEA is among some of the city’s best-known and largest employers who are taking part in a major new jobs fair next month.

Around 70 employers are expected to exhibit at the Exeter Jobs Fair at the Corn Exchange on September 15.

To support the city’s rapidly-growing economy, Exeter City Council and Exeter Jobcentre Plus have joined forces to host a free, twice-yearly jobs fair.
