Staff at a top regional conservation charity have shared their successes and frustrations as they try to reduce, reuse and recycle consumables in their cafes and restaurants.

Wild Planet Trust is the charity that runs Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall. Staff and volunteers work to reduce the zoos’ impact on the planet in as many ways as they can – but it’s not always an easy or a simple process.

Redrow plants bumblebee orchard at Saxon Brook

Redrow Homes has planted a special fruit orchard at its stunning Saxon Brook development to provide a welcome home for bumblebees whose numbers have been declining in recent years.

The award-winning housebuilder has planted 70 trees designed to create a perfect bee habitat in time for the spring, including several apple, plum and pear species.

There will be a further 26,332 plants specifically chosen to enhance the development’s appeal for the buzzing pollen carriers and other wildlife.

More electric bikes in the city

Co-bikes, the ground-breaking self-service bike scheme, is introducing the latest stage in its mission to create easy, enjoyable travel in Exeter's city centre.

The latest hire location, going live on Wednesday 1 March, is in the heart of the city centre, next to the Civic Centre, opposite the Tourist Information Centre. Staff will be at the docking station from 10.00 – 16.00 to tell you more about this innovative scheme. Cyclist hailed winner in Redrow's green commuter challenge

A 12 strong team of competitive-commuters met at Exeter central train station on Friday 25 September for our commuter ‘Top Gear style’ race to determine the fastest, greenest, cheapest, safest and easiest way to commute across the city to our office in Pynes Hill.

As the clock hit 8.45am, the busiest time for travel, the green chequered flag waved the competitors off in a bundle of chaos, consisting of runners, a cyclist, an electric bike, BMW i3 electric car, a taxi, walkers, a bus and a train to Newcourt, who completed the last leg by walking.

Stagecoach bus employees have topped a global eco-driver performance scheme which measures fuel-efficient driving.

More than 4,100 Stagecoach drivers have been awarded Fleet Elite status under the programme managed by GreenRoad, whose telematics system serves professional drivers in the UK, Ireland, Europe, the Middle East, America, Australia and New Zealand.

Of the Stagecoach drivers who reached Fleet Elite standard, 179 were from Stagecoach South West.

120 guests attended the opening night and exclusive awards ceremony of The Exeter Contemporary Open, now in its eighth year and held at the Exeter Phoenix.

Exeter-based property developer, Grenadier Estates, has secured planning permission to develop an innovative new scheme of eco­ cottages at Widemouth Bay in north Cornwall.
