Royal Mail today (7 August) welcomed the Government’s consultation on imposing tougher penalties for irresponsible dog owners.

Dog attacks are a significant hazard, faced by postmen and women on a daily basis. Since April 2011, there have been over 5,500 attacks on Royal Mail postmen and women, some leading to a permanent disabling injury. Attacks have resulted in the loss of 4,100 working days due to injuries. Over 2,400 postmen and women were attacked across the UK by dogs from April 2012 to April 2013. Weekend heatwave leaves two dogs dead and hundreds more suffering

The RSPCA has hit out at owners who left their dogs in hot cars over the weekend, despite repeated warnings about the dangers.

The animal welfare charity was inundated with hundreds of complaints over the weekend from people who spotted animals suffering as the temperature rocketed to 90 degrees in some parts of the country.

Around 350 calls about animals trapped in hot cars came into the RSPCA’s National Control Centre over the weekend of 6-7 July. Unfortunately the heat wave also claimed a number of lives.

Devon and Cornwall Police’s newest puppy recruits can be seen live over the internet.

For the first time ever the dog section has bred its own litter of pups from an existing police dog and the force is streaming the dogs’ welfare live over the web.

Police German Shepherd ‘Ruby’ gave birth to the litter of pups early in the morning of Monday 3 June.

It is hoped that when they are old enough they will be able to be trained up as police dogs for the Force.

Seasonal beach ban on dogs starts 1 May

East Devon District Council (EDDC) has passed byelaws prohibiting dogs from certain parts of the beaches in the District between 1 May and 30 September each year.

There are still many areas where dogs are welcome and visitors who are unsure about where they may take their dogs onto the beach are strongly advised to check the signs or EDDC's website before taking their dogs onto the beaches. EDDC is happy to give advice to holidaymakers with dogs about the best areas to visit.
