48% of dog owners in Devon could be breaking the law

As people take to their cars this August Bank Holiday, Dogs Trust, which has a Rehoming Centre in Ilfracombe, is launching ‘The Houndway Code’ a car safety awareness campaign after new research revealed that 17% of dog owners regularly travel with their dog unrestrained in the passenger seat of their car and 5% even reaching into the backseat to interact with their dog whilst at the wheel.

The survey also revealed that nearly half of dog owners in Devon who drive with their dogs in the car, are unaware that they are breaking the law and not abiding by the highway code by not...

The RSPCA is poised for a huge increase in the number of calls to its emergency hotline as more hot weather arrives this July - the worst month for incidents of dogs being left in hot cars.

The animal welfare charity - which works alongside 11 other animal charities and organisations to raise awareness of the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars - is predicting a peak in reports of animals suffering in the heat during the month of July - after receiving a huge 2,065 calls in June.

Each year, the RSPCA receives thousands of calls from concerned members of the public reporting...

Free microchipping for pets in Exeter

It's now compulsory that your dog should be micro chipped.

Statistics (we like statistics) show that there are around 1.8 million dogs not chipped which makes them untraceable if they go missing. You just need to look on this site www.doglost.co.uk to see how common and frequent dogs do go missing.

As well as dogs going missing we also get the occasional dog that's been dumped, again having it legally chipped will help us ID the animal and owner.

As a dog owner myself i wanted to hold a free micro chipping event for anyone (City Wide and beyond) who hasn't already...

Following extensive public consultation between December 2016 and January 2017, councillors at East Devon District Council have approved new measures, in the form of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), to encourage more responsible dog ownership across the district.

The new PSPO, which incorporates tighter dog controls was approved, together with a PSPO relating to a ban on the feeding of seagulls on seashores and promenades, by the council’s Cabinet on 26 April 2017 and both PSPOs will be enforced by council officers while they are out and about in the local community....

35% of Exeter Dog Owners May Have Unintentionally Supported Organised Crime

An estimated 25% of UK puppies are mass farmed in appalling conditions, where the mother is forced to give birth to as many puppies as possible, as fast as she physically can.

They are taken away from the mother before the minimum recommended eight weeks, and kept in cramped cages, barely fed, never having human contact. The dogs can go on to develop health problems due to their upbringing, and may require significantly more care in later life. On average, dogs from puppy farms suffer from more frequent and worse health problems than responsibly bred dogs due to the conditions they...

Police are appealing to the public to come forward if they have recently been offered very young Shih tzu puppies for sale, if they are concerned about the provenance of the dogs.

Both dogs are four weeks old and unweaned. One is a male black and white and the other is a female, brown and white.

The dogs were taken from a residential property in Colleton Way, Exmouth on Sunday 23rd April, sometime between 8.30pm and 9.10pm. The house was unoccupied for the short space of time that the owner was admitted to hospital and a family member arrived to look after the property....

As the weather warms up, Devon County Council’s public health team is stepping up its advice for people to be ‘tick aware’ as they get out and about in the countryside.

The advice comes during Tick Bite Prevention Week (24-30 March) – a UK public health and awareness campaign to inform the public about the different ways to prevent tick bites. Tick bites can be a serious problem and in many cases can be harmful causing infections that can lead to serious health problems. Around 3,000 people each year are affected by Lyme disease in the UK.

Ticks are found in moist areas of...

Police are reminding dog owners of their responsibilities following reports of attacks on livestock in the region, caused by dogs being walked off the lead.

Last year there we over 150 crimes recorded across Devon and Cornwall linked to livestock worrying offences; the number of these incidents also usually increase during the lambing season as we exit winter.

PC Phil Johnson from the Teignmouth Crime Hub, said: “We are currently investigating a particularly nasty dog attack on a pregnant yew this week near Holne in Dartmoor, which led to the animal having to be put down...
