Record numbers sign up for Devon Cycle Challenge

A record number of organisations from across the county have signed up for this year’s Devon Cycle Challenge, which returns next month.

More than 140 workplaces have already registered to take part in the free challenge which will run throughout September. That’s 50 more organisations than last year, when over 1,500 people supported the campaign, and there is still plenty of time to sign up before Thursday 1 September. Chiefs side to face Dragons

Rob Baxter says his Exeter Chiefs side must ready themselves for a “full blooded” encounter when they travel to Newport this evening in their final pre-season friendly against the Dragons at Rodney Parade (7:30pm).

It's a bit of a mixed bag for weather this holiday weekend, there's sunshine, clouds and even outbreaks of thundery showers expected.

A yellow warning for rain has been issued for Saturday with showers, some of them heavy and thundery, together with outbreaks of rain spreading north across much of England and Wales, elsewhere we will see sunny spells. Searches continue in Exminster after terror arrest

The 30-year-old man arrested on Wednesday 24 August in Somerset on suspicion of terrorism offences remains in custody.

Searches at an address in Exminster and a wooded area in south Devon are ongoing.

The man was arrested at 12:20pm by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Counter Terrorism Command (SO15), supported by colleagues from Avon and Somerset and Devon and Cornwall Police, on suspicion of being involved in the preparation for acts of terrorism under section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

West Country band The Stylers, who recently triumphed in a competition to spot young musical talent across the counties of Devon, Dorset and Somerset, have received their trophies from key event partner Beviss & Beckingsale.

Beer's historic shelter gets a makeover

A popular historic wooden shelter in Beer’s Jubilee Memorial Ground has had its old rotten support posts swapped for eight rustic replacements, made from locally grown sustainable timber.

East Devon District Council’s Property Services and Countryside teams, assisted by a number of East Devon Conservation Volunteers (EDCV), painstakingly sourced and stripped the Douglas Fir posts, which came from Holyford Woods.

Dodgy DVD eBay seller prosecuted

A Barnstaple man has been handed an eight month sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting to selling fake DVDs, phone covers and clothing online.

Appearing at Exeter Crown Court, Shaun Ryan, aged 34 of Wool Barn Road, pleaded guilty to six charges of selling and possessing counterfeit goods.

The case was brought by Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service after a test purchase of a ‘Game of Thrones’ DVD box set from Mr Ryan’s eBay shop, ‘ryanzenterprise’, was found to be phony.
