Archaeologists unearth Roman remains in the heart of Exeter city centre

One of the largest archaeological excavations since Princesshay is currently being undertaken in Mary Arches Street, in advance of a new student development.

AC Archaeology is carrying out the dig on behalf of the developer. The work has to be carried out as part of a planning condition to record the remains and finds before destruction by the development.

The site is just inside the walled Roman and medieval city, behind the city wall, which runs the other side of Bartholomew Street, and is within the corner of the earlier Roman legionary fortress.

Fourth time lucky for Matt at 40th Dartmoor Folk Festival

IT was fourth time lucky for Matt Norman at the 40th anniversary Dartmoor Folk Festival, held at South Zeal near Okehampton at the weekend.

Folk music, song and dance enthusiast Matt, from Bristol, was declared the champion adult Dartmoor Step Dance competition champion for 2017 after a hotly-fought competition.

Matt, formerly from South Zeal and Exeter, had previously won the title in 2008, 2011 and 2015 and now equals competitor Lisa Sture, from North Devon, who holds the record for having previously won the title on four occasions.

People who love their beach are in for a treat as giant seagulls, a Scotsman on stilts, an enormous dog and a monster made of wet wipes descend on Teignmouth for three days of entertainment and education.

Street theatre and family activities are taking place from August 15 – 17 to celebrate life beside the seaside and explain more about how we can keep our beaches clean and seas sparkling.

More than 600 children and teenagers are being treated for a type of diabetes normally only seen in adults aged over 40 – an increase of 14 per cent in a year – which reinforces the need for urgent action on obesity, councils warn today. More people than ever can go off the beaten track to explore the countryside as the National Trust launches an all-terrain mobility scooter that can go ‘off road’, opening up the Killerton Estate to people with limited mobility.
