£1.1 Million Lottery boost for College Sport in the SW

The students of Exeter College and indeed across the South West can look forward to improved sporting opportunities thanks to new National Lottery funding from Sport England. A total of £17 million of investment will fund ‘College Sport Maker’ roles in Further Education across the country. Within the South West, 11 of these new full time posts have been awarded.

Trafalgar Day Service celebrates great victory

Every year, since 1973, the Exeter Flotilla has held a Trafalgar Day Service in Exeter Cathedral to celebrate Lord Nelson’s great victory in 1805.

This year on Trafalgar Day, Sunday the 21st October the White Ensign will once again fly over the Cathedral.

The service starts at 11.30 am and will be attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Devon, the Lord Mayor of Exeter and the Deputy Lord Mayor, and Senior Royal Naval and Royal Marine Officers.

County’s new flagship ‘Heritage Centre’ to officially open

Devon County Council’s new ‘Heritage Centre’ will be officially opened next week by Council Chairman Jerry Brook.

The flagship centre was created as part of a drive to modernise the Council’s heritage service, and sees the Westcountry Studies Library and the Exeter branch of the Devon Record Office conveniently brought together under one roof for the first time.

James Baker from Cockwood, Exeter, has reached the final in a nationwide competition launched by Farmers Weekly to find the UK’s brightest farming talent.

He will be joining nine other hopefuls at a gruelling five-day Farmers Apprentice Bootcamp (22-26 October) in the hope of winning a £10,000 prize to kick-start a career in farming.

Inaugural St Thomas Community Festival planned for 2013

The inaugural St Thomas Community Festival will take place in and around St Thomas Pleasure Grounds on Saturday 14th September 2013. The festival is the brainchild of the recently formed St Thomas Community Association (STCA) and is intended to be a celebration of the St Thomas area as a vibrant, diverse and exciting part of the city.

The organisers hope that the event will build community cohesion, bringing together residents of all ages and backgrounds in a celebration of the variety of sporting, creative and musical talents that flourish in the area.

Exeter theatre takes award-winning Bunnies to London

The Bike Shed Theatre in Exeter has been awarded Arts Council funding to tour to Bristol, Salisbury and London.

The award-winning play Bunnies – which will tour from the end of October – was written specially for the Bike Shed by young playwright Kieran Lynn. It was first performed in the Theatre last year and received a Peter Brook Empty Space Award.

The tour will help the Bike Shed develop links with other venues and national companies, raising their profile across the country.

A group of Exeter Independent Retailers have got together to create a 'Christmas Shopping Crawl' based on the model put forward by the Independent Retailers Month UK, to encourage shoppers to do their Christmas shopping in Independent shops and experience the unique and exciting products they offer as well as fabulous customer service.

John Lewis Exeter gets off to a flying start

Shoppers from Exeter and the surrounding areas celebrated as John Lewis opened the doors to its first shop in Devon on Friday 12th October. Within hours of opening, thousands of customers descended on the new shop, the retailer’s first flexible full line department store.
