Vote for your favourite Exeter City goal of 2012

After whittling down possible goals for the accolade, the shortlist is now open for votes to select Exeter City Football Club’s Goal of the Year 2012!

The goal that gets most votes will be put forward at the Football League Awards, and it’ll take on the best of the rest with the hope of winning the Mitre Goal of the Year 2012.

With five corkers to choose from, there’s little doubt that whichever goal gets the nod to represent the Grecian, it’ll put up a fair fight!

New consumer champion for health and social care

A £1 million contract to develop a new consumer champion for Devon has been awarded by Devon County Council to the Community Council of Devon, an independent local charity.

Persimmon first in South West to sign up for FirstBuy 2

Persimmon Homes will be the first housebuilder in Devon and Cornwall to offer prospective home buyers access to the Government’s FirstBuy 2 scheme after signing up with the Homes & Communities Agency.

Nationally, 281 of the group’s Persimmon and Charles Church developments will offer the scheme, with a possibility of further sites being added at a later date. Across the South West region at least ten of the developments will offer the scheme. Home buyers can reserve their new home using the scheme from this week for legal completions from 1st April, 2013 to 31st March, 2014....

University of Exeter delivers a month of sport for all

Throughout February the University of Exeter will be holding International Sport Month. International Sport Month offers all students the opportunity to try and experience a wide range of sports and events including football, volleyball, golf and the Rugby Varsity. Anyone can take part in the activities, which are largely free and occuring around Streatham Campus.

Water bills fall while investment in services rises

Good news for householders in the South West, as average household bills are set to fall by more than seven per cent in 2013/14 while £460,000 per day will be spent on improving the region's vital water and sewerage infrastructure.

Awards ceremony says thanks to Devon's recyclers

Devon’s super recyclers were recognised in a special ceremony (held on Thursday 31st January) to thank them for their hard work in helping to protect Devon’s environment.

This was the first year of the Recycle Devon Thank You awards, which mark the 10-year anniversary of the Don’t Let Devon go to waste campaign.

Devon enjoys a recycling rate of 55% (2011/12) making it one of the highest recycling counties in the country.

Exeter City’s unbeaten record in 2013 came to an end at the hands of local rivals Torquay United at St James Park. An early penalty by Rene Howe set the Gulls on their way, as the visitors settled early.

City pressed and pressed in the closing stages but an equaliser just wouldn’t materialise as the Gulls’ defence held out resolutely to claim the win. Bring Up the Bodies by Budleigh Salterton-based novelist Hilary Mantel has won the title of 2012 Costa Book of the Year. The sequel to Mantel's award-winning novel Wolf Hall and the second book of a trilogy, Bring Up the Bodies continues the life of Thomas Cromwell and explores one of the most mystifying and frightening episodes in English history, the destruction of Anne Boleyn.

The announcement was made this evening (Tuesday 29th January) at an awards ceremony held at Quaglino’s in central London.
