Ice warning for Devon's roads this morning

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of ice for South West England, which it said is in place until Tuesday night.

Gritting crews in Devon have been out across the county to reduce the risk of ice on roads, but drivers are asked to take care.

It was reported that temperatures dropped to -3C (27F) in some parts on Sunday night. Snow is still affecting some areas, with more snowfall expected in parts of Devon later and on Tuesday.

South West Water will be able to carry out repairs to a collapsed sewer in Exeter ahead of schedule after Devon County Council helped bring forward the start of work.

Contractor May Gurney had been preparing to undertake work on the collapsed sewer in Holloway Street, but repairs were delayed as the site is immediately adjacent to an ancient masonry arch structure, which is a Scheduled Monument, laying deep under the highway.

Stay safe on the roads: hazardous driving conditions

Areas to be avoided if at all possible...

There is a lane closed and hazardous driving conditions on the A38 Haldon Hill in both directions in Kennford at the A380 Telegraph Hill junction, because of snow.

There are also hazardous driving conditions on the M5 between J30, A376 (Exeter) and J26, A38 (Wellington), because of snow.

Meanwhile, there is queueing traffic and hazardous driving conditions on the A380 Telegraph Hill in both directions in Ashcombe at the B3192 junction, because of snow.

Residents in Mid Devon woke up to snow this morning with drifts in some places.

By 8.30am the snow had turned to sleet however, there were strong winds making driving conditions tricky.

Parts of Devon woke up to a blanket of snow today after night in which some areas experienced blizzard conditions.

The Met Office said more snow was possible throughout the morning and issued an amber warning for the South West.

Drivers urged to abide by the rules of the road

Devon and Cornwall Police are reminding motorists to ‘think safety’ before setting out on the roads during the winter months.

A successful roads policing enforcement campaign, known as Operation Vortex, will be launched across Devon and Cornwall alongside this advice, to ensure motorists use the roads safely and target motorists who don’t abide by road traffic laws.

Many routes in and around the Force area will be the subject of attention by officers, in the last two weeks in January, to address complacent or arrogant driver behaviour which can lead to serious consequences...

Residents urged to prepare for snow and ice

People in Devon are being asked to be prepared for the possibility of widespread snow and ice on Friday and over the weekend.

Early forecasts suggest that there is a threat of rain moving in from the South West overnight on Thursday, possibly turning to wintry showers as it hits colder air. With road surface temperatures dropping to -4, ice may also be a hazard.

83-year-old lady mugged and pushed to the floor

Police in Exeter are appealing for information after an 83-year-old lady was mugged after she had just got off a bus and was walking to her home.

The incident occurred between 9.30am and 10.00am this morning, Wednesday 16th January, in Willey’s Avenue, off Alphington Road, Exeter.

The victim was approached as she was walking home, pushed to the floor and had her handbag and contents stolen.

The lady suffered a suspected fractured femur and lacerations to her face and head and was conveyed to the R D & E Hospital for treatment.

Plans revealed for Devon’s dementia care Centres of Excellence

Families of residents at a Devon care home have welcomed new plans to tranform the home into a new dementia care Centre of Excellence.

Plans for the first two of Devon County Council's Centres of Excellence, at Mapleton in Newton Abbot and Woodland Vale in Torrington, go on show this week.

Open days at the homes are giving residents, their families, as well as staff and others, the first opportunity to see the plans.

They are the first of up to ten Council homes to be redeveloped over three years in their £11.2 million improvement programme.
