Our concert on Thursday March 12th at 7.30 p.m. in Exeter Cathedral features one of Poulenc’s most celebrated works, “Gloria” followed by a journey into a world of dreams with Elgar’s “The Music Makers”.
The Exeter Philharmonic Choir conducted by Andrew Millington will be joined by The Sinfonietta.
We feature two contrasting works in this concert: Poulenc’s sense of fun and mischief shines through his setting of the Gloria. He said of the piece: “I had in mind those frescoes by Gozzoli where the angels stick out their tongues; and also some serious Benedictine monks I had...
Bicton Arena has announced that Empire Coachbuilders, a firm of horsebox manufacturers based in Worcestershire, are the new title sponsors of its two international horse trials next year. The Devon venue will stage two CIC, or international, competitions in 2015, the first in April and the second in August with another affiliated event taking place in July. The new sponsorship deal means there is a substantial prize fund for the CIC two star classes. Arena manager Helen West said: “This is wonderful news as we are now able to offer prize money that is very much worth winning and we hope it...
TV gardener Toby Buckland has never been on a cruise but can’t wait to sail on Saga Sapphire as guest speaker on the Gardens of the Atlantic cruise in February.
The father-of-three says he has always wanted to sail on the ocean after hearing stories from his father and uncles who, as £10 Poms, went to Melbourne after the Second World War - and were there to watch the Olympic Games in 1956.
Toby, who is based in Devon, said: “They worked in the building trade but came back because my grandmother sent them a telegram to say she was unwell. They packed up everything and came...
Nominations are open to highlight mental health heroes in Devon.
The Deputy Prime Minister is calling on people to nominate unsung mental health heroes in their local area as part of his campaign to raise awareness of mental health problems. One in four people will experience a mental health problem this year but for many the stigma and discrimination that surrounds mental health will make it harder for them to speak out and seek the support they need. That’s why the Deputy Prime Minister is calling for nominations for local Mental Health Heroes to celebrate those from every region...

Haydn Thomas insists there will be no panic within the ranks despite Exeter Chiefs slipping to a third successive Aviva Premiership defeat on Saturday.
In what was Thomas' 200th appearance for the Devon outfit, it was former club Gloucester who took the spoils 26-25 in a highly entertaining encounter at a packed Sandy Park.
After back-to-back losses away to Sale Sharks and Bath Rugby, Rob Baxter's side were hoping a return to familiar home surroundings would provide the ideal catalyst for them to rediscover their winning formula.
A fascinating and unusual new artwork has been added to the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, in the form of a sculpture wound around the branch of a tree and suspended in mid-air. The sculpture, entitled White Entwined, was created by Devon artist Deborah Duffin. Organic in shape, it hangs from the tree like huge exotic flower, fading from pink to white and is made from a multitude of wire collected over many years. Duffin often uses recycled materials in her work and observes the natural world to inform her creative process. The explanation for her interest in creating a sculpture...
Thousands of rent or mortgage payers across the South West might be facing a not-so-happy new year, as new research reveals one in nine are worried they will be unable to make payments this January.
Research from Shelter and YouGov paints a bleak picture for many this winter, with 65% of rent or mortgage payers in the South West revealing they are already struggling to keep up with their housing costs.
Shelter is warning that ignoring money worries rather than seeking advice could lead to people’s home being put at risk. Worryingly, over a quarter (27%) of people in the...
