Dawlish alternative route choice revealed

Network Rail has revealed its choice for an alternative railway line to the heavily damaged Dawlish line today.

The plans come as the rail authority had consider an alternative to the current coastal line after the recent storms destroyed an 80m section of track near Dawlish.

The potential route from Okehampton to Plymouth via Tavistock through areas of Dartmoor National Park has already come under criticism from some transport campaigners as it bypasses large areas of South Devon.

The Prime Minster, David Cameron has said he is determined to give the public “a proper alternative service and solution” to the destroyed train line in Dawlish.

The train line which was destroyed when Tuesday night’s storm breached the Dawlish Seawall is not expected to be functionally repaired until at least the 18th March despite full scale repair works.

Many of the services between Exeter St Davids and Newton Abbot are running limited replacement bus services until this date. However rail operators have said that the service is dependent on local road conditions....

'Major incident' declared in Dawlish as storms batter Devon

A major incident has been declared in Dawlish after part of the railway line was left suspended in mid air as storms battered Devon.

Twenty people were evacuated from their homes in the town, meanwhile two people were rescued from a vehicle which was trapped in floodwater about 9.20 last night.

Police have asked that people wanting to see the scene at Dawlish stay away to "allow responders to do everything possible to help local residents."

Landlord fined £4,000 for safety issues

A landlord in Dawlish has been fined £4,000 for renting out an unsafe property.

Curtis Betteridge was prosecuted by Teignbridge District Council after ignoring warnings to make a flat on Iddesleigh terrace meet fire and safety regulations.

It is the first time Teignbridge has taken court action against a landlord.

The case was heard before South Devon Magistrates, sitting in Torquay, on Tuesday December 2. Mr Betteridge and the case has tried in his absence.

Dawlish Strand opening celebrations

An official opening of Dawlish Strand will be held on Friday 6 December to coincide with the town’s Christmas lights switch-on.

The £1.5 million regeneration scheme, which is a joint initiative between Devon County, Teignbridge District and Dawlish Town Councils, has rejuvenated the Strand area since it was completed in the summer and it has been welcomed by traders.

Traders, businesses and community organisations who want to make the most of social media are invited to the Teignmouth and Dawlish Social Media Cafe on Monday 11 November being held at Ugly Duckling Cafe, 2 The Lawn, Dawlish from 5pm until 7pm.

Seaside resorts benefit from free Sunday parking

Teignmouth and Dawlish have joined the rest of Teignbridge car parks in being free on Sundays.

Teignbridge-owned car parks in the two seaside resorts have re-joined the successful scheme which sees all 35 of the council's car parks free of any charges on a Sunday.

The free parking scheme is aimed at boosting local trade and cutting costs to motorists.

Sundays are free of charge throughout the year for all urban and rural parts of the district. Charges apply through the summer months in Teignmouth and Dawlish.
