World music premiere on Dartmoor

The world premiere of a new composition, inspired by Dartmoor and composed by Michael Alec Rose, will take place on Saturday 18 June at a Summer concert in Moretonhampstead.

Il Ritorno: A Perambulation for Unaccompanied Violin will be performed by internationally renowned violinist Peter Sheppard Skaerved on a 1629 Girolamo Amati violin (Amati’s son taught Stradivari the craft of violin making).

The concert is being held on Dartmoor at the express wish of the composer, whose work has been performed widely in Europe, the United States and South America.

The Exeter Singers, conducted by Tony Yates are holding a charity concert in aid of the “Meet and Remember Club”, a newly formed charity serving local people and in particular those with early or moderate dementia. The club meets weekly on Wednesdays at The Beacon, Beacon Heath. The choir will be performing a variety of music, from madrigals to Cole Porter, interspersed with poetry and solo piano and voice. If You Go Down to the Woods Today...

To be accurate, if you were down at Bystock Pools near Exmouth recently you would have been in for ‘a big surprise’.

Against the backdrop of tranquil pools and colourful heathland you would have seen a handful of musicians from Exeter Symphony Orchestra, in full concert dress working with photographer Matt Austin.

The extraordinary photo shoot has resulted in some stunning images.

These will be used initially in the June edition of Devon Life to promote The Devon Wildlife Trust’s ‘Concert for Wildlife’ to be held in Exeter Cathedral on the 16th July.

Exeter School changes lives with 15th WaterAid concert

For the 15th year running and with support from South West Water and Ashfords Solicitors, the talented young musicians and singers from Exeter School will perform a special concert to raise funds for international charity WaterAid.

All proceeds from the concert, which takes place at St Michael's Church, Heavitree, from 7:30pm on Tuesday 26 April, will go directly to WaterAid projects in Zambia, helping some of the country's poorest communities gain access to clean water and safe sanitation.

The Second Symphony, from its first performance to today, remains one of Sibelius’ most popular works. Its importance at the time was also due to the Finnish struggle for independence and early reactions to the work included some efforts to read into it an overtly nationalistic, patriotic programme. Much attention was focused on the heroic finale, of course, but also on the long, anguished slow movement, music of great passion and pain, surging along in dramatic waves toward a grim conclusion.
