The Medical Foundation Devon Group is holding a book fair on behalf of Freedom from Torture (formerly known as the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture).

A wide variety of books will be available for purchase at very reasonable prices as well as tea, coffee and cake.

Please come along and find out more about this charity, which does marvellous work helping people who have survived torture to rebuild their lives.

Penguin good enough to eat at Living Coasts

A life-sized penguin cake has been made to mark a conservation charity’s tenth birthday.

The special cake, in the shape of a macaroni penguin, celebrates the first decade of Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium.

This feat of culinary engineering is a 7-tier reinforced fruit cake smothered in marzipan and icing. It is some 60 cm (2 ft) tall and weighs around 15 kg (33 pounds). It was created by Hallett’s the Bakers, the leading South Devon craft bakers, who supply the Living Coasts cafe.

City MP praises success of new social enterprise pilot project

Trainees on a pilot scheme to refurbish and re-sell bicycles in Exeter have been demonstrating their skills to MP and cycling enthusiast Ben Bradshaw.

The project, run by city charity Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI), is designed to give training and skills to the unemployed as well prevent unwanted bikes from being dumped in landfill.

Mr Bradshaw said he was very impressed with what Exeter Community Bikes had achieved so far and felt it was an excellent idea for a social enterprise. “I think this is a fabulous project because it does so many different things.

Halfords teams up with charity to send unwanted second hand bikes to Africa

Halfords in the Exeter area are to take unwanted bikes off customers’ hands in an initiative to provide much-needed affordable transport for communities in Africa.

For six days, from Thursday 11 July to Tuesday 16 July, Britain’s biggest bike retailer is inviting customers to bring cycles currently lying abandoned in garages and garden sheds to any of its 460 stores.

Those donating bikes will be offered a 10% deal off the price of a brand new model as well as seeing their old two-wheeler go to a good cause.

One top Devon company is helping an animal charity with the little things that make a big difference.

Sparkworld has donated a selection of domestic appliances and kitchen tools to Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium.

“These things may not be sexy, but they are vital!” says Jenny Paton from Living Coasts. “The hand blender is used for preparing fish for feeding birds. And sometimes we make fish soup to syringe feed the rays, especially if youngsters need feeding up. The dishwasher is used to clean animal feed bowls.

Torbay Hospital has donated a used ultrasound machine to Paignton Zoo.

Paignton Zoo Head of Veterinary Services Ghislaine Sayers said: “Ultrasound is a valuable imaging tool that helps us to diagnose certain types of soft tissue and organ disease including ligament damage and heart disease.”

It has already been used to diagnose a pregnancy in a sheep. Ghislaine again: “The big benefit for us is that it is portable. We could never have afforded to buy a new one for ourselves, so to have this one given to us is wonderful!
