With an estimated 6.5 million people in the UK providing unpaid care to family members and friends, Devon authorities are urging carers to take a moment, for themselves.

There are about 90,000 people providing unpaid care for loved ones and friends in Devon; more if you include Plymouth and Torbay.

Many carers don’t see themselves as ‘carers’; they feel that they’re just doing what families and friends do for each other when they need help, and they’re not going to make an issue of it.

But Devon County Council and Devon’s CCGs say, ‘Do make an issue of it. It’s...

Exeter marines lay foundations for civilian careers

As National Armed Forces Day approaches (June 24) a trio of former marines are shouting about the career opportunities for ex-military personnel in the South West.

Research from the Royal British Legion last year showed discrimination was making it difficult for veterans to find jobs after leaving the armed forces. However, a group of ex marines from the South West say they’ve had very positive experiences in finding a new civilian career and encouraging others to consider roles in the construction industry.

Devon County Council and the NHS are asking carers what they think excellent carers’ services would look like in Devon.

The organisations, which form the Devon Carers Partnership, are thinking now about the support services that they’ll be tendering again for in future, so they’ve arranged events around the county to ask carers what they think.

Carers can be all ages, but for this research they’re specifically interested in what adult carers of adults think about support available to them.

They want carers to tell them about key aspects of the support they’d like,...

Carers of people with dementia wanted for online trial

Alzheimer’s Society has launched the UK’s largest research trial of support for carers of people with dementia.

Nine in 10 carers for people with dementia experience feelings of stress or anxiety several times a week – and a further 80% find it difficult to talk about the emotional impact of caring, finds an Alzheimer’s Society survey.

Alzheimer’s Society and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust are launching Caring For Me and You – a research trial that will test tailored online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and support specifically designed to help carers find ways of...
