New bridge over A379 opens

The impressive new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the A379 is open for use.

The 36-metre span bridge, which was lifted into place last summer, has been constructed as part of the ongoing South West Exeter development .

Devon County Council is currently delivering £55 million of infrastructure improvements on the edge of the city following a successful bid through the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, administered by Homes England.

As well as the bridge, the scheme includes road widening and realignment, new junctions, and an upgrade of the Devon Hotel...

Quay bridge replacement 'not ruled out'

The wait to replace a well-known former bridge at Exeter’s quay is likely to go on after it was left off the city council’s proposed new budget.

The wooden Mallison Bridge, originally built in 1984 and named after a professor who left his money to the city, closed in 2018 because of safety concerns after its timbers rotted. It was torn down in 2020.

As a result, a small alleyway next to Commercial Road is currently the only way for pedestrians and cyclists to access the main part of the quay from the popular Cricklepit Suspension Bridge.

Bridge lifted into place at Summer Lane in Exeter

The expanding cycle network in Exeter received another lift at the weekend, with the installation of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge.

The new bridge at Summer Lane completes the first two kilometres of Devon County Council's E4 cycle route - providing a vital connection between Exeter Arena/Exhibition Fields and Bettysmead Playing Fields.

It establishes a direct link which will shorten the route and will remove sharp deviations in direction, narrow shared paths, and the necessity to use a Toucan crossing on Summer Lane.

The 18-metre span pedestrian and cycle...

Support for £1.3m cycle and pedestrian bridge proposals

Proposals for a pedestrian and cycle bridge over Summer Lane in Exeter have received the support of Devon County Council’s Cabinet today (Wednesday 9 January).

Councillors approved the construction of the £1.3 million bridge, which will form part of the E4 cycle route from Monkerton to the city centre, subject to planning permission being granted.

The 18-metre span bridge would connect to existing paths in Exhibition Fields and Bettys Mead Playing Fields. These paths are being widened and improved as part of a separate project and would retain their connection directly with...

The planned new footbridge would replace Alma Bridge, and would be approximately 37 metres upstream from the existing structure.

The bridge features a 19-metre span and would be accessed by short sections of steep ramps.

Exeter could get a stunning new waterside feature.

Plans have been submitted to build a brand new bridge and boardwalk down on Exeter’s Quayside. The new structure would replace the existing Mallison Bridge which spans the medieval leats on the north bank of the River Exe. The bridge had to be repaired in March 2017 after some wooden sections became rotten. After work was carried out, it became apparent that a long-term solution was needed. The City Council has now come up with a design which is both striking and functional. The plans have been submitted to the Council’s planning...
