A South-West based creative agency has designed an international online commemoration to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday. Award-winning Toucan designed The Queen’s Birthday Book, which will form a huge digital collection of messages, photos and videos. Maynard School celebrates The Queen's 90th birthday

Girls at The Maynard School in Exeter got into the spirit of things to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday.

Everyone dressed for the day in red, white and blue and, following a quick assembly, great fun was had by all in making the number 90 on the tennis courts outside the main school building.

In this formation, they even managed a quick rendition of ‘Happy Birthday to You’ followed by a solo saxophonist playing a very poignant national anthem before returning to their classrooms.

parkrun celebrates five years at Killerton

This Saturday hundreds of runners will tackle the 5km course at the National Trust’s Killerton estate to celebrate the fifth anniversary of parkrun and will be baking a birthday cake to mark the occasion.

Killerton was the first National Trust property to work with parkrun to host the popular 5km run.

The free run takes place every Saturday at 9am, and the number of runners has grown from 44 at the first Killerton parkrun to over 370 on the busiest ever day. The parkrun organisers hope to break the record this week as the event reaches its five year milestone.

Birthday celebration on Ladies’ Night

Celebrations will be in full swing on Ladies’ Night at Exeter Racecourse this year which beautifully coincides with Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday on Thursday, April 21. Finest outfits are the order of the day as judges walk around the racecourse to select the finalists for the coveted Best Dressed Lady and Best Dressed Gentleman competitions. Party raises cash for Rheumatology Fund

Caroline Parris, a dairy farmer’s wife, from Upottery, has raised £6,000 for the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital’s Rheumatology Fund as a way of saying thank you for the care she has received. She raised the cash by holding a big 40th birthday celebration and a Cream Tea party for friends and family at their farm near Honiton.

In 2000, Caroline was diagnosed with Adult-Onset Still’s Disease, a rare immune disease related to Rheumatoid Arthritis, which inflames and damages joints, but also causes fevers, rashes, reduced appetite, anaemia and enlarged lymph glands, liver and spleen....

Exeter Library celebrates 50 years

Exeter library is celebrating its 50th birthday on October 22, and the public is being called on to join the festivities.

The library, then called the ‘New City Library’, was unveiled by the Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, on Friday 22 October 1965.

The opening followed the previous library, in Castle Street, being bombed in 1942.

Since then hundreds of thousands of people have passed through its doors and used its services.

And now, to mark the birthday celebrations, the public is being urged to share their memories and experiences.

Some 80 members of the South West Group of the National Service (Royal Air Force) Association and their guests gathered for a celebratory buffet at the White Ensign Club in Exeter in early June on the occasion of the Group’s tenth anniversary.

The local Group was established in 2005 with a nucleus of twelve members, while today over one hundred RAF National Service veterans are “on the books”. Nationally the organisation can boast a membership of over 2400.

The Group was recently represented by eleven members at the Armed Forces Day parade in Exeter.

Mary's special girls' night out

A limousine picked up birthday girl Mary Mills from Hospiscare’s Exeter hospice to enjoy a “fantastic” night out with her girlfriends.

Despite being very poorly Mary was determined to put on her glad rags and have fun. “I had been planning this for weeks and although I felt rough and was weak on the day I knew I had 18 girlfriends and two limos waiting for me! Everybody I knew who was special to me was going to be there.
