East Devon District Council is inviting local residents who live near Belshers Slipway and Shelly Beach in Exmouth, as well as people who use the slipway and the beach, to comment on its proposal to introduce a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that could address alleged anti social behaviour, occurring on the beach and slipway.

Some incidents, involving the launching and recovery of watercraft, as well as people driving onto the beach to access watercraft on the estuary, have become a source of annoyance to some people living nearby.

If brought in, a PSPO could ban...

Marine litter can undermine the psychological benefits of coastal environments, a study has shown.

The beneficial effects of the blue environment to human health and well-being are well documented, but there has been little research into how the growing global issue of marine litter might negate them.

To measure this, Plymouth University secured funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to assess public reaction to the differing conditions of coastlines.

Participants were shown images of clean...

A large mystery hole has appeared on Exmouth beach, forcing a section to be closed off.

The hole, which appeared at the eastern end of the beach, near Orcombe Point, was discovered at lunchtime yesterday (2 July) by a member of the public.

The National Maritime Operations Centre sent Exmouth Coastguard to secure the area.

On arrival the Coastguard team found a hole measuring approximately 15ft x 15ft filled with water. The surrounding sand was also soft and fresh holes were appearing nearby.

A cordon was in place and safety advice was given to beach users...

It’s less than seven days to go to the biggest mass participation event the National Trust in the South West has ever organised. The Big Beach Picnic, taking place from 12 noon this Saturday (4 July), is happening at fifteen different locations across the South West. From Polzeath and Towan beach in Cornwall to Woolacombe and Branscombe beach in Devon to Studland and Weymouth beach in Dorset to Bossington and Brean Down beach in Somerset. A highlight of the 2015 South West Coastal Festival programme, the Big Beach Picnics are a free ‘mass participation’ way of celebrating 50 years of...

New signs show where dogs are welcome

Along with other coastal authorities, East Devon District Council has designated areas on each of its beaches for many years where people can enjoy the beach and sea away from dogs.

There are no changes to the areas where dogs are welcome, but this year the council has renewed the signs at the beaches to make the message clearer.

Everyone likes to enjoy the beach but we know that users like to use the beach in different ways, and many people and families like to stay away from areas where dogs are running free. There are still plenty of areas where dog walkers can enjoy the...

Drone provides bird’s eye seaside view

Sidmouth’s seagulls were joined by a ‘bird of no feather’ when a tiny fixed wing drone took to the skies on behalf of East Devon District Council to photograph Sidmouth beach and cliffs east of the River Sid to provide up to date evidence of coastal erosion for its Beach Management Plan project.

The drone – a SenseFly eBee, weighing just ½ kg and fitted with a compact computer and camera – was carrying out a trial mission commissioned by Plymouth Coastal Observatory. Flying for 45 minute periods at speeds of around 45kmph, the drone - or unmanned aerial system (UAS) as it is...

East Devon District Council has now completed work on the coastal defence beach recycling project at Sidmouth’s main beach, with the exception of clearing some drains that had filled with pebbles as the beach levels rose, and the reinstatement of a boulder into a rock groyne.

The work, which began on 5 January, was finished well within the original estimated time frame of six weeks and has restored the beach’s profile back to a healthy level with a protective blanket of shingle.

However, this is not about making the beach look pretty. For over 20 years the shingle has...

East Devon District Council’s cabinet have agreed to proceed with a proposal from Grenadier Estates to develop an exciting new watersports centre as the first part of the new Queen’s Drive leisure area.

The high quality watersports centre would occupy about two acres at the front of site with the road being moved to the rear of the site allowing easy beach access for water users.

The centre will be architecturally attractive and environmentally sustainable with retail and cafe units included within and a new open-air events space and other public open space outside....
