Exe Estuary Teaching program wins industry award

A teaching resource, to help school children learn all about coastal areas, has won an industry award.

Living with a Changing Coast (LiCCo) is a european project helping coastal communities to better understand, prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change, sea level rise and erosion on the natural and human environment on both sides of the channel.

Its UK partners include the Environment Agency, the Exe Estuary Management Partnership, Devon County Council and the National Trust.

Cathedral awarded £275k for repairs

Exeter Cathedral has been awarded £275,000 from the final round of the government’s World War One Cathedrals Repairs Fund.

The money will be spent on urgent repairs and conservation of the Cathedral’s East End, which houses the medieval Great East Window.

The window dates back to around 1300 and is thought to have been one of the most ambitious of its day in England.

The glass contained in the window is of national significance, incorporating important examples of early 14th and 15th century craftsmanship.

Devon County Council wins national ‘flu fighter’ award

Devon County Council was among six winners today at the annual national NHS flu fighter awards. The panel of judges, including the editor of Nursing Times magazine Jenni Middleton, said that the Devon team’s remarkable efforts will be promoted across the country to inspire similar work. The awards are part of the NHS flu fighter campaign run by NHS Employers, which has helped increase the number of frontline NHS staff having flu vaccinations by 182,000 since it began in 2011. Honour for Cathedral stonemason

Chris Sampson, who is responsible for overseeing all the conservation and building work at Exeter Cathedral has been awarded the highest honour his profession boasts - that of the title ‘Master Mason’.

Just four or five craftsman a year are awarded this honour, which recognises their skills, knowledge and overall contributions to their craft.

Exeter Library shortlisted for national award

Devon County Council’s flagship Exeter Library has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

The library, which recently underwent a multimillion pound refurbishment, is one of only six from across the UK to be selected for the coveted Library of the Year accolade at the forthcoming Bookseller Industry Awards.
