Signed in pencil by the artist, Angels sold for £440 and was bought by a local lady for her friend who works as a nurse in Cambridge. Chilcotts pledged the commission of £175 from the sale to the Honiton Hospital League of Friends.

Liz Chilcott says “We’re really pleased to donate this amount to the League – these are difficult times for so many charities unable to run their usual fundraising events.”

A fascinating drawing signed by politician Harold Macmillan goes under the hammer at Chilcotts Auctioneers sale on March 7.

The picture by amateur artist Miriam Cozens depicts an historic scene at the House of Commons; the day that Winston Churchill made his final major speech as Prime Minister.

Known as ‘Never Despair’ the speech talks about the divisions that set in after the end of the Second World War, the hostility between East and West and the threat of the nuclear bomb. In his two final sentences Churchill made a farewell to the House and the British people. He said...

An enormous solid oak trestle refectory table reputed to have come from Battle Abbey in East Sussex is to be sold at Chilcotts Auctioneers Fine Art, Antiques and Collectors Items sale on November 30.

The 17th century table had been kept at a house on Exmoor and was part of a probate valuation; the family revealed that their grandparents had lived in Mayfield in East Sussex in the early 1950s, a stone’s throw from the Abbey, which is how it may have come into their possession.

The remarkable table, the top of which is formed of one solid piece of timber, measures 8ft 4...
