An Exeter School pupil is looking to begin university life across the Atlantic this September. Matt Rutter, currently an Upper Sixth pupil has been offered a place to study economics at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania where he will also be able to develop his thriving tennis career as part of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) which saw both John Isner and Cameron Norrie (the current British number one) compete before joining the professional circuit.

All children aged five and over are eligible to have the COVID-19 vaccination from 5 April.

Bookings can be made online or by calling 119 from 2 April. The vaccination is not being given to this age group in school. Walk-in and pop-up clinics are advertised on NHS England’s site finder here , but please check that the clinic is offering vaccinations to this age group.

Having the COVID-19 vaccine reduces the likelihood of further disruption to their education, developing Long Covid and passing the infection onto vulnerable family members and friends.

Tickets still available for charity lecture for Ukrainian refugees

There’s still time to get tickets for a charity lecture to raise money for those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Local historian Dr Todd Gray is giving the lecture at Exeter’s historic Guildhall on Wednesday 13 April at 2pm. Money raised from the event will go towards supporting Ukrainian refugees settling in Exeter.

Entitled 'Exeter & its own struggle for freedom' the lecture will explore similarities between the Exeter Blitz and the current invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army.

The magical event that set Connaught Gardens alight with illuminations last year has been confirmed for the start of festivities for Christmas 2022.

This time the event will run for longer, spanning two weekends from Friday December 9 to Sunday December 18 with the first session starting at 4.30pm and last entrance at 8pm.

A big tidy up of Exmouth’s Queens Drive space, costing more than £20,000, has been completed with the area now reopen to the public.

Tourists and local residents alike will be able to sip drinks and eat delicious food, provided by local traders, throughout the day and evening in the newly revamped area.

Local charity, Exeter Homes Trus t, celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this week by taking part in The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative and unveiling a commemorative plaque at one of the Almshouse properties.

Exeter Homes Trust, formerly known as The Exeter Municipal Charity, was founded over 900 years ago. Providing housing for people, who are unable to remain in their own homes by reason of reduced circumstances, the Charity owns and manages 143 Almshouses in the city, at 8 estates.
