As Devon’s NHS continues to experience severe pressure, local NHS teams are asking friends and relatives of people who are ready to go home from hospital to do all they can to pick them up as soon as possible.

All four of the county’s acute hospitals are seeing a very high number of people who are very poorly and need hospital care, particularly with Covid, flu, other respiratory illnesses and norovirus.

That means that when someone has been assessed by NHS staff as being medically fit to leave, it’s important they are helped home as soon as possible.

Devon Air Ambulance is sometimes called to assist with Inter Hospital Transfers (IHT) but more recently, they have undertaken a new ‘Rapid Transfer Service’ for stroke patients.

Strokes are the second most common cause of death worldwide. 85% of strokes are caused by a blockage (a clot called a thrombus) in the small blood vessels of the brain, and the remaining 15% occur as a result of a bleed in the brain. Administering emergency clot-busting drugs has been the mainstay treatment for many years but risks further complications. Developments in treating these thrombolytic strokes...

Devon Air Ambulance welcomes your donations as the post-Christmas clear out gets underway

At this time of year, charity shops across Britain see an influx of donations. As new toys and gifts have arrived in many homes over Christmas, they quickly become the new favourites as older ones are abandoned for the latest playthings. It can sometimes become a struggle to accommodate them all and more often than not, a rehoming exercise ensues.

It’s not just the children who might find an abundance of gifts under the tree either, grown-ups may also find their wardrobes and drawers in need of a ‘sort out’ as brand-new outfits, coats, shoes, boots, bags and accessories have...

It's the incredibly awesome direct conversion of sunlight into energy, with no moving parts, no radioactive waste or radiation, no chemical processes, no greenhouse gasses released, no noise, and no maintenance (unless you want to wash them off every once in a while).

It seems to be too wonderful to be true, but it isn't. The biggest disadvantage in the past was simply the high cost. But everything has changed now. Around the previous decade, manufacturers all over the globe have increased manufacturing capacity, and the cost of solar has plummeted by almost 80%! As a result, it...

Drivers advised to plan ahead as lane remains closed on M5 near Exeter

National Highways is advising drivers travelling southbound on the M5 near Exeter to be aware of delays during the New Year holiday period.

A half-mile section of lane one of the southbound carriageway between junctions 30 and 31 has been closed for safety reasons due to a bridge defect.

The fractured bridge expansion joint plate was detected by a monitoring system in operation on the Exe viaduct, carrying the M5 over the River Exe, and will require specialist repair work early in the new year.

The lane closure is causing significant delays during peak travel...
