RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is the largest garden wildlife survey in the world and provides a snapshot of how garden birds are faring in the UK.

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Nearly 700,000 people took part in 2022, counting 11 million birds. In Devon, nearly 18,500 people joined in.

Ambulance Service issues renewed appeal ahead of Monday’s industrial action

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is again urging the public to use 999 appropriately during industrial action on Monday (23 January) and to call only if it is a life-threatening or life-altering emergency.

On days where there is strike action, patients should continue to call 999 if there is a medical or mental health emergency [when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk]. Ambulances will be able to respond in these situations, but this may only be where there is the most immediate risk to life.

St John Ambulance’s young volunteers give over 45,000 hours of lifesaving first aid support

Inspirational youngsters from across South West played essential roles, delivering healthcare and supporting local communities with St John Ambulance, in 2022.

Of the 9,000 5 to 17-year-olds in the first aid and health response charity’s Badger and Cadet programmes, 1,633 dedicated individuals gave over 45,700 hours of their time providing lifesaving first aid and care alongside adult St John volunteers – 2,760 of which were given by young people in the South West.

Levelling Up funding for projects in Devon

Multi-million schemes to improve transport links in Exmouth and Okehampton are among more than 100 projects receiving a share of £2.1 billion through the government’s latest round of Levelling Up funding.

Devon County Council has been awarded the full amount of its £15.7 million bid to complete the Dinan Way link in Exmouth, while West Devon Borough Council has successfully received £13.4 million to develop a new railway station on the eastern edge of Okehampton.

Devon preschool graded ‘Good’ in its first year of operation

A small, friendly preschool near Exeter that welcomed its first intake of young children last spring has already received a good grade.

In a recent Ofsted inspection, the Kidzone at Exminster - operated by local charity Westbank Community Health and Care - was described as a ‘Good Provider’.
